Trigonometric Functions on the unit circle
Lesson Outline
I worked with Olivia on examples which required her to identify the six trigonometric functions for various angles whose radian measure was given. After we finished those examples, we started to work on some exercise problems. They included problems to provide the coordinates of several major angles. We then worked on providing the trigonometric functions for both positive and negative angles. There was no assignment.

Lesson Outline
Having addressed the role of trial courts, today we examined the role of appellate courts. Olivia defined the basis of appeals as errors of law and procedural errors and discussed the difference between the two. I then provided instruction on how the procedures in an appellate court differ from those in a trial court. We discussed how most appellate panels are made up of 3 judges(except the US Supreme Court that has nine justices) , and Olivia did a good job identifying the terms majority and dissenting opinion. I then explained the purpose of precedent and the legal principle of stare decisis. In that regard, we examined the US Supreme Court case of Morse v Frederick that examined whether high school students in public schools have free speech rights under the First Amendment. Olivia looked at summaries of 4 cases on this issue and discussed how earlier precedents' rulings in favor of students were overruled in Morse. Based on this review of case law , I emphasized that the meaning of the Constitution and the rights we enjoy thereunder vary depending on who sits on the US Supreme Court. The Supreme Court can overrule precedent, even its own. For homework, I assigned reading pgs. 400,402-406 and answering 4 study guide questions.

Their Eyes Were Watching God/Hurston
Lesson Outline
As the novel strikes a secular tone, we examined why the author might have titled the book"Their Eyes Were Watching God" .The title is a quote from the chapter we studied today that famously takes place in The Glades during the 1928 hurricane. We discussed other references to God in the book and delved into the characters' fear of death during the hurricane . As death looms, the character's eyes watch for God. We thought about what people might look for at such a time and how life's fragility gives meaning to Janie's grabbing all of life's experiences before they elude her. Olivia also examined various symbols and figurative language and practiced identifying the various forms of figurative language in these dramatic pages. For homework ,I assigned finishing the novel.

Finding the six trigonometric Functions of different angles
Lesson Outline
The plan was to finish studying the text examples about the six trigonometric functions of various angles. Unfortunately, Olivia didn't get online until twenty minutes before the end of the lesson and we were only able to do a few problems from one example. There was no assignment.

Olivia presented research and photographs on the impact of the 1928 hurricane in West Palm Beach. We discussed the segregated mass graves as this is a scene also depicted in the novel. Last, we discussed the domestic abuse that arises in Janie's third marriage . For homework I assigned reading the next 10 pages of the novel.

Trigonometric Functions on the unit circle
Lesson Outline
I explained to Olivia how the unit circle could be centered on the origin so that the number line can be drawn around the circumference. In that way, the x and y coordinates can be assigned to each point on the circle. We also examined special angles and found their coordinates. We made less progress than I planned because Olivia started half an hour late. There was no assignment.

The Legal System
Lesson Outline
We studied the nature of the American adversarial system by discussing the role of the lawyers, the judge and the jury in both civil and criminal matters. In terms of criminal trials. we reviewed the rights of the accused under the 6th Amendment, and I discussed the US Supreme Court case of Gideon vs Wainwright that required states to provide lawyers for indigent criminal defendants. We also examined the purpose and role of plea bargains in the criminal justice system as well as settlements in the civil system. As we will be more closely studying the role of each specific level of the court system , I further defined the difference between a trial court and an appellate court and defined the term "original jurisdiction ." Last, we examined jury selection cases that prohibited striking potential jurors solely due to the prospective juror's race. For homework,I assigned completing the study guide on appeals.

Lesson Outline
Per last night's assignment, Olivia discussed and analyzed the motifs and imagery in chapter 16 in terms of the main character's journey of self-discovery. Olivia commented on how Janie's exterior change from blue satin dresses to overall and boots mirrored her interior development . We further examined racism perpetuated by African -Americans against other African-Americans as illustrated by the character Mrs. Turner who has a very light complexion and therefore disdains Blacks even though she is also African-American. This led to a good conversation on racial stereotypes and prejudice and the impact of wealth on African - American status within the White community. Our reading in the novel is leading up to the 1928 hurricane that devastated Palm Beach County where the characters reside. For homework, Olivia is conducting some research into the impacts of the 1928 hurricane on the West Palm Beach area and she will then compare her research to the novel's depiction of the hurricane 's impact in our area.

Arc length, angles, and radius
Lesson Outline
Olivia and I worked on problems dealing with arc length, radii, and central angles. The problems required Olivia to find the arc length of a circle based on given radii and central angles changed to radian measures. She also had to find the central angles based on given arc lengths and radii. There was no assignment.
