Amira learned the key differences between poetry and prose. Afterward, she read Chapter 7 of her novel. Then, based off the prose in the novel, she formed a poem by piecing together words in the chapter, attempting to represent the overall mood of the chapter with her poem. (found poetry)
During 4th period today we began learning about Pakistani and human rights activist, Malala Yousafzai - the youngest person to ever be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17. Malala was raised in a family that supported her education and education for all girls. This is not necessarily the norm in Malala's home country. Malala became a teenage advocate for the rights of girls and spoke out about how all girls should have access to education. This nearly cost Malala her life. When she was 15 years old, her school bus was attacked by a terrorist group known as the Taliban. The intent was to kill Malala. On her school bus, in front of friends and other students, the gunman shot her in the head. The miracle of Malala's survival, her continued activism and her ongoing contribution to human rights - especially rights for girls and women remains an inspiration. We will be focusing on this inspiring story in upcoming classes.

At 12:48pm, Tara conveyed to me that Mrs. Ketchum had just phoned to say she was picking up Kate and Amira at 1:30pm today. Literally 8 minutes later, Mrs. Ketchum arrived at school to pick up the girls. Therefore, 4th period class with Amira was cut short and I was unable to meet with both Amira and Kate for 5th period, as scheduled.
Amira continued to work on the Stanford Achievement Test during first period today. She began the "Language" portion of the test, but she did not complete it during this period.

I discovered a glitch with Amira's testing materials and alerted Tara. Tara asked me to note the discrepancies on Amira's test booklet and answer sheet - which I did. Amira has been working out of test booklet "Form D." However, she has been marking her answers on Answer Sheet "Form A." Therefore, AMIRA HAS BEEN TAKING TEST FORM D this week. In addition, there are no instructor materials for the 8th grade Test Form D "Listening" section of the test. Tara is also aware of this discrepancy.

Marine Biology:
Marine Mammal Science -
I continued with a presentation describing my career as a marine biologist. I described how I photographed dolphins and determined from the photos, how gender, and age influences the life experience of a wild dolphin. We also discussed how that differs from the lives of dolphins in captivity. We discussed some things I did during my college career and Amira asked intelligent questions about college and life experiences as a marine biologist.
