Lesson 3: Severe Weather Risks – Dutch learned how hurricanes form and how magnitude is determined on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Then he learned which locations in the United States are at highest risk for tornadoes and how they are rated on the Fujita Damage Intensity Scale. Next he learned about flood and drought damage. He learned how meteorologists predict severe weather.

Lesson 2: Volcano Risks - Dutch learned that volcanic eruptions change Earth’s surface and they form along convergent boundaries. Then he discovered that landforms called volcanoes form when molten rock erupts onto Earth’s surface. Next we learned that volcanoes occur at divergent and convergent plate boundaries. At a divergent boundary lava flows into the rift created by the separating plates. This lava forms oceanic crust as a cools. Mid-ocean ridges are underwater mountains that form as lava cools and builds up. He learned that sometimes a tectonic plate at a convergent boundary will sink into the mantle carrying water with it and causing the mantle to melt and form magma. Some large volcanoes form at hot spots which are locations where volcanoes form far from plate boundaries. In order for magma to form, the crust and mantle must become hot enough to melt.

American Colonies
Lesson Outline
Dutch reviewed the information on Roanoke. Dutch wrote a journal entry as if he was a colonist in Roanoke. He added the theory how he disappeared and added details to support it. Dutch read about the Jamestown settlement. Dutch compared and contrasted Roanoke to Jamestown.

England Colonies
Lesson Outline
Dutch read in the textbook about when England began to create colonies in America. Dutch identified the first English colony Roanoke. Dutch read how and why it was created. Dutch explained why it is considered the "lost colony". Dutch watched a video about different theories of what happened to the colonists and why they maybe disappeared. Dutch wrote the different theories and circled the one he agrees with the most.

Lesson 1: Earthquake Risks Review – Dutch reviewed for a test on earthquake risk:
• An earthquake is the rupture and the movement of rocks along a break or crack in Earth’s crust.
• A fault is the surface along which the crust moves. When the forces acting on the rock layers are great enough movement occurs along the fault and energy is released causing the ground to shake. Most earthquakes occur along plate boundaries.
• Earthquakes can change Earth’s surface creating new landforms. Compression and tension forces form ridges and mountains as crust moves vertically. A tsunami is a huge ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake which makes the ocean floor subside.
• When extreme shaking from an earthquake causes loose sediment to behave more like a liquid than a solid it is called liquefaction. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides which bring rocks and soil from mountaintops into valleys.
Then he took the test on Lesson 1: Earthquake Risks.
