In today's session, Sofia and I worked on adding information about her experiment for a presentation. For this we also completed simple data analysis from the data she collected during the experiment. This involved her getting familiar with using both excel and PowerPoint.
As we will soon complete the novel and have a test that requires an analysis of quotes from the novel, we today worked on how to write an analysis of critical thematic quotes. We concentrated on the author's interesting comment that the "cost" of having ambitions includes self-denial, anxiety, and discouragement. Sofia discussed concrete examples of self denial, anxiety, and discouragement and in her notebook outlined the meaning and thematic significance of a similar quote from the novel. She then drafted an analysis paragraph which we together edited. HW read chapters 36/37 and complete study guide.
Lesson 1: Earthquake Risks – Sofia learned which areas are at high risk for earthquakes. The Western states in the United States are at highest risk. California has a transform plate boundary and there is a convergent plate boundary in Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Then he learned that some parts of central and eastern United States have a higher earthquake risk because they have had them before. Next he learned that scientists can tell you the likelihood of an area experiencing an earthquake but they can’t tell you exactly when it will happen. Next he learned that to reduce the impact of earthquakes, buildings can be designed to withstand the shaking that occurs.
In today's session Sofia had to engineer a solution to a problem, using critical thinking and creativity. The problem she had to solve was to lift many books above the ground using only four sheets of paper and scotch tape. She tried to beat the world record of 27 but we could only get to 23.
