Religion: Reviewed pages 83-84 in Religion book per teacher lesson plans. Discussed the important events in Jesus' life that we celebrate throughout the year.
ILA: Viewed Fundations video. Completed the rough draft for "My favorite pizza" opinion paper. iReady for 10 minutes. Get Epic for 10 minutes. Discussed what was read and activities completed for each of these online components.
We practiced introducing ourselves to each other in Spanish. We also practiced how to ask someone his or her name in Spanish. We reviewed vowel recognition and vowel sounds in Spanish. We completed pages 20-27 in the student book.
Math – Lesson 11 Session 1 Telling and writing time: Jonathan learned how to tell and write time. He was introduced to the hour hand and the minute hands on a clock. Then he learned how time is written. Next he learned to recognize halves within a circular clock face and tell time to the half hour. He also understands how to determine the hour when the hour hand is between two numbers.
Science – We completed a science test where Jonathan identified key terms and the correct offspring for different species.
We talked a bit about Google Earth and took a geography quiz together. Since I was remote from home too, we introduced our pets to one another, and then continuing from last week's discussion of tree holes and squirrels, we looked and read through the short blog posted on National Geographic here: https://blog.nationalgeographic.org/2015/12/23/when-endangered-lemurs-need-a-home-this-is-what-you-build/
Jonathan is an A++ reader!
He asked a very good question about how many lemurs live in the boxes. Although usually we only see mother baby pairs or an individual, we have one box with two occupants. This is surprising because the critically endangered Nosy Be Sportive Lemur is normally solitary, sleeping alone by day and foraging for leaves alone at night. Next session will work on sharing my screen so Jonathan can see some results that came in today about the current 'tenants' of the nesting-boxes.
Jonathan was enganged to see who is on my team in Madagascar and asked who actually built the boxes, and then was happy to see a photo of my team on a second blog, which we will read in our next session. He started reading that blog and asked great questions about a primate artifact at The Walters Art Gallery (museum in Baltimore, MD) and then we ran out of time. Brilliant young Explorer!

very interactive using both computer and iPad, links etc.
Before today's session, I downloaded the Microsoft Teams App for MacBook and the call and video quality was flawless, much better quality than using Teams within any web browser. We also found out that the family has FB messenger and Kids messenger, that could be used later on for remote teaching from Madagascar as a backup to MS Teams.
Religion: Reviewed pages 81-82 in Religion textbook per teacher lesson plans. Discussed ways Christ is present in the Mass. Prayed the Act of Contrition, Hail Mary, Our Father, and Glory Be.
ILA: Utilized planning sheet to plan for pizza opinion writing lesson. Discussed opinion writing sentence starters, the different types of transition words/phrases for the reasons/details, and conclusion transitions. iReady for 20 minutes and Get Epic for 15 minutes...
We practiced greeting a new friend and asking for his or her name in Spanish. We practiced how to recognize vowels and how to retell events in Spanish. We also completed pages 20-27 in the student textbook.
The lesson was online so started with an introduction to Luna the adorable dog at Jonathan's home. In showing me a couple of favorite toys, first a hover board that Luna chases (too cute!) and then a stuffed tree hollow with three (3) named squeaky squirrels that live in the toy's tree holes. This is Luna's toy, and a great way to relate to how other animals use tree holes as safe refuge from predators. I told Jonathan about our program in Madagascar, comparing squirrels and lemurs. We compared them for a bit and since I have found the toy online for our international program. I have texted a link with homework that can be read by parent with child if you would like to explore more. https://www.aam-us.org/2020/10/30/the-promise-of-virtual-education-programs-cross-cultural-exchange-school-museum-collaborations-and-steam-learning-and-lemurs/ In summary, Nosy Be sportive lemurs that I study with our nonprofit live in tree holes, and in degraded forests that lack tree holes, we build wooden boxes where they sleep and have babies. These lemurs are critically endangered. Very cool that Jonathan offered such a relevant toy to the discussion, so Dr. Clark will buy a tree log for students in Madagascar! Great idea Jonathan!!

The first 15-20 minutes were spent dealing with no audio on Microsoft teams, so we conducted the lesson via iPhone FaceTime. It was a very engaging lesson once connected.
Math – Jonathan and I looked up the denominations and paper currency in circulation. We identified the people on each bill. Next he completed several 2-step problems where he totaled purchases, paid with paper money, and calculated change. He practiced identifying the currency returned as change. Next he completed 15 minutes of I ready.
ILA: iReady for 20 minutes. Planned for an opinion writing using the prompt "Do you prefer summer or fall?". Wrote a beginning sentence, 3 reasons and a conclusion. Reviewed opinion sentence starters. Drew pictures representing each of the reasons. Used the planning sheet to then write a rough draft paragraph and added some descriptive words during this process. Drew a picture on the bottom of the page to represent the summer in New Jersery.
We reviewed the alphabet, days of the week, numbers 1-50, and months of the year. We took a quiz and practiced greeting each other in Spanish. We also practiced writing our names in Spanish.
