Lesson Outline
This morning we began with our daily language review. This activity was enriched by discussing the “tense” of the sentences as well as their type. We looked at capitalization and punctuation in the closing of a friendly letter as well as discussed the literary element of cause and effect in one of the sentences. Additionally, we examined double negatives such as “doesn’t never”. We then read chapters 4 – 7 in our book, Dolphins at Daybreak. After each chapter, we worked through comprehension and critical thinking questions. We focused on the vocabulary terms peeping, defective, scram, and bobbed with our reading. We made predictions as we read and inferred as to why we thought the mini-sub was damaged even further. We discussed rereading when the sentence doesn’t make sense. Jonathan drew an illustration to reflect what he saw for one of the scenes in chapter 7. Additionally, we read a portion of the text in which the author used the literary device of repetition. The words calmly and calm were used multiple times in a small section of text. We discussed how the author’s use of repetition helps to provide emphasis on a particular item. In this case, we were reading how Jack and Annie were trying to say calm when escaping the mini-sub with the shark in the water. To enrich our literature topic, we read an article entitled Watery Wonders of the World which discussed the dives of an extreme diver who explores sinkholes, underwater caves, and icebergs. We read of some of her experiences and then watched a short supplemental video that showed us some of the animal life, islands, and icebergs of the world’s five oceans. For writing today, Jonathan continued working on his short story about a boy discovering that his pet can talk. We discussed features that his story needs to contain as well as a beginning, middle, and end. Jonathan began working on his story. He read the first few sentences to me and we discussed his overuse of the word “and”, which at many times was starting the sentence.

Lesson Comments
Jonathan and I discussed different book options for the next few weeks. As our characters from the Magic Tree House book have just started a new quest that will wrap up in the next three books, Jonathan decided he wants to continue with this series. He was offered some options of different directions we could go, but he is really enjoying Magic Tree House and elected to continue on this path. I will continue to enrich the series by discussing challenging vocabulary as well as comprehension and critical thinking questions, providing supplemental information related to the topic, and integrating challenging spelling words. Additionally, we will begin studying figurative language, particularly similes and identify and discuss within the stories.

Biomes of the World
Lesson Outline
Jonathan worked on the tiaga forest biome. He learned where this biome is located. Jonathan looked at world maps and learned that the taiga forest takes up more land than any other biome on Earth. He also learned that this biome is in Russia in the area known as Siberia. It is also in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Greenland, Canada, and Alaska. Jonathan drew the biome for his practice of the important concepts. He made the types of trees found in the taiga which include many conifers. Jonathan learned the vocabulary word coniferous. He studied the needle formation and cone types as well as tree shapes of the spruce, pine, cedar, and fir. Jonathan learned that the caribou travels south to get out of the long winter. He also had a demonstration of the concept of long winter when we did the Summer and Winter Solstice diagrams yesterday. Jonathan learned that the taiga has wolverines, the Cooper's hawk, wolves, moose, the showshoe hare, deer, lynx, and chipmunks. Jonathan learned that many of the animals have broad feet so that they can walk on top of the snow. He learned that the winters are very long and very dark, and that the summers are very short with light almost 24 hours per day. He learned he meaning of the "Land of the Midnight Sun."
