Lesson Outline
Religion: Today Jonathan read the Act of Contrition prayer from his We Believe textbook. We then had fun reviewing the unit 1 vocabulary terms with a word scramble. He did a great job and only needed help with “commandments”. Language Arts: Jonathan took his whole book assessment for our novel, Sunset of the Sabertooth. He did a terrific job scoring 15/16 (94%). We then worked through an activity to practice the literacy skill of cause and effect related to events in our novel. A few of these were tricky and we worked through them together. Also related to our novel study, we discussed character traits to describe the main characters, Jack and Annie. Jonathan needed prompting to generate adjectives for them, which is a skill we will continue to develop. Next, we expanded on the compare and contrast lesson from his Ready Classroom textbook. We worked through a compare and contrast of our novel, Sunset of the Sabertooth and another Magic Tree House book of his choice, Dinosaurs Before Dark. We discussed events and details from each stating what was alike and what was different. We enjoyed some Sci Show Kids videos about ice age animals and glaciers which told us about the Ice Age 12,000 years ago. We learned that approximately 1/3 of the Earth was covered in ice. We also learned about animals such as the mastodon, mammoth, smilodon (sabertooth), and glyptadon. For Fun Friday, we enjoyed Jeopardy (7). This one requires a lot of spelling! Jonathan answered 5 questions of increasing difficulty in each category related to homophones, spelling of tricky words, homophones they’re/their/there, and generating a contraction and using it in a sentence.

Earthquakes and Earth's Crust
Lesson Outline
Jonathan started his lesson by taking notes on a reading about the tectonic plates. Jonathan made drawings to illustrate his work. He also wrote vocabulary words and their definitions as they were encountered in the reading. Jonathan studied the words core, mantle, and crust. He made a pie-shaped diagram of the layers of the Earth. Jonathan read about the movement of the tectonic plates and learned the concept of the plates colliding in different ways. One way the plates react is by pulling apart. Theses types of formations occur under the ocean. The second way Jonathan learned about the tectonic action was when the plates collide. This type of action causes mountains to form or sometimes volcanos to form when the magma reaches the surface of the Earth through a vent caused by pressure from the molten magma. Jonathan learned about a third type of plate movement which is like slipping or rubbing past each other on the fault lines. This type of action causes earthquakes. Jonathan saw pictures of the San Andreas fault line in California. Jonathan showed me a volcano picture he drew and he labeled parts as the core, lateral vent, and crater. Jonathan watched a lab that will help him work on tectonic plates for more understanding. He will work on some labs next week.

Land Forms
Lesson Outline
Jonathan watched a Discovery Education short video on land forms. He was introduced to mountains, hills, valleys, plains, canyons, and plateaus. During the short video, Jonathan described and compared characteristics of each landform. After the video, Jonathan drew the landforms on his virtual whiteboard. Jonathan finished the session with a brain pop video on landforms with a short quiz.

Two digit Addends with regrouping and Money
Lesson Outline
Jonathan and I reviewed the steps when solving two-digit addends with regrouping. Jonathan solved ten problems on his own with little help as a short assessment. Jonathan worked on remembering all the steps and keeping an eye on making silly mistakes. Jonathan reviewed the coins and their value by watching a brain pop video and taking a quiz. Jonathan viewed virtual manipulative coins and counting the money. Jonathan played the game "break the bank" on ABCYA.COM and was able to count the coin amount.

Lesson Outline
Language: According to Jonathan, it’s Thumping Thursday today! In his daily language review, we focused on capitalization, punctuation, phonics, and we labeled the sentence types. In his Ready Classroom book, we read page 141 about comparing two texts. We read the definitions of compare and contrast. We read through some questions we can ask ourselves as we are reading to compare and contrast for a deeper understanding of the text. We then completed page 142 in which we compared and contrasted the photos on two different source texts. For comparison we noted that both pictures showed women, while to contrast, one was a drawing while the other was a photograph. We enjoyed reading chapters 8 – 10 to finish our novel, Sunset of the Sabertooth. We worked through comprehension and critical thinking questions after each chapter. We also did a pronoun hunt on some of the pages in the book. Finally, Jonathan did a lot of writing on his animals of the rainforest project. We wrote all about the purple honeycreeper describing what it eats and where it lives. He also wrote a lengthy paragraph about the different appearance of the males and females. We discussed ways to mix up the format of his sentences, different transition techniques, when he could use a pronoun or if he needed to mention the noun by name, and ways to incorporate adjectives.

Maps
Lesson Outline
Jonathan and I reviewed how to read a map and the vocabulary by watching and listening to a map song. Jonathan was provided the map of Magic Kingdom. He found the location of the rides on the maps by using the key. Jonathan was provided a scenario of a guest walking the park. Jonathan had to express the direction the guest was walking to the next attraction. This activity was done with the map of Legoland and the map of the Palm Beach Zoo. Jonathan was introduced to the continents and oceans by watching a brain pop video and completing the quiz.
