creating writing
Lesson Outline
Jonathan learned what an acrostic poem is. We looked at an example. We also brainstormed words that describe Jonathan, different things he likes to do and the like. He then did very well writing an acrostic poem using his name. Jonathan was proud of the finished product. After listening to a passage on the legend of leprechauns, Jonathan came up with 5 different ways to catch a leprechaun. Jonathan chose one of his ideas and then wrote step-by-step instructions on how to catch leprechauns. He drew a picture to go along with his writing.

Lesson Outline
Religion: We continued in Jonathan’s We Believe textbook about celebrating that Jesus rose from the dead through song as well as remembering our Baptism and welcoming new members into the church. We sing songs of joy and praise. We read the lyrics to the songs Awake! Arise, and Rejoice as well as from Shout from the Mountains. Language arts: Today we began with our daily language review and examined proper nouns as well as possessive nouns. We integrated possessive nouns throughout all of our work today. In his iReady textbook, we compared characters and how they changed over the story using two source texts. We also examined words and pictures to determine the author’s intent. We watched the Brain Pop Jr. learning video about Rainforests. Jonathan was excited about the video and scored a 5/5 on both the follow up easy and hard quizzes. We practiced his novel related spelling words for the week.

Lesson Comments
I provided session activities to Evie and Debbie Salinger. I’m hoping next week, when some of my other students are not here, that I will be able to have more than one hour a day with Jonathan. If his family is up for it, I’d be glad to shift my day this week to an 8:30 or 8:00 a.m. start and then he could finish early for the day. This way we could have more time together if they wanted to for this week. I’m glad to try to help provide some consistent curriculum with his other subjects, but only if that is communicated to me on who it is, in a timely manner. I know his mother did ask both teachers exactly what they would be doing with him at the beginning of each session. Fortunately, because I was able to catch them in advance, they were able to represent the school as prepared instructors.

Poetry and informative speaking
Lesson Outline
Jonathan and I discussed how to construct an informative speech. Using his ipad for information, Jonathan constructed a brief informative speech on the executioner bee. I then read to Jonathan from Bruce Lasky's poem book. Jonathan liked one of the short ones and read it several times and almost memorized it. We then ended the session with Jonathan and I writing a creative poem about bees.

Language arts: Today we began with our daily language review. This task addressed capitalization, end marks, contractions, proper nouns, and commas. Next, we took the spelling pre-test for our new novel study, Afternoon on the Amazon. This list includes words such as screech, freeze, predator, and piranhas. We reviewed his errors and he wrote the correct spelling. This is book 6 of The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. We read the first two chapters of the book where the kids are off to find something to help Morgan le Fay. We looked at pictures of where rain forests are located on world maps. We saw that they fall near the equator and discussed the climate of those areas. Religion: Today we read about the three days from Thursday to Sunday before Easter. We learned that Lent gets us ready for these Three Days, which are called the Easter Triduum. We celebrate Jesus’ dying and rising to new life during this time. Jonathan drew a picture of a way he could celebrate this event by praying together with his family.

Lesson Comments
Due to scheduling mix-ups, my 2 hours language arts / religion session was cut to 60 minutes at mom’s request. I was scheduled with him from 11 – 12 and 12:30 – 1:30, but I had other students scheduled at the same time. This morning, his mom had agreed to put me in for 2:30 – 4:30 to accommodate for the scheduling errors. When I logged on at 2:30 with him, his mom said, “Jonathan just had public speaking for an hour, which was unexpected, so can he just have you for an hour?” I agreed. She requested an updated schedule. I told her I believed the scheduling was being addressed. I informed Nicole of this information via text.

Lesson Outline
We kicked off our session with his daily language review, in which we reviewed sentences for punctuation involving end marks, apostrophes for possessives and contractions, and commas. We then moved right into our literacy study of Night of the Ninjas. Jonathan scored 11/12 on his spelling test, which was up from 5/12 on the pretest. We then read the final two chapters of the novel and we were excited to see the kids were helped by Peanut the mouse! Jonathan did a great job with his follow up-comprehension questions after our reading. He wrote about an important setting in the story that affected the characters. We also did a contraction and possessive noun hunt through some of the book’s pages. We compared and contrasted the two. For Fun Friday, we enjoyed a game of Jeopardy! Jonathan worked to answer 5 questions of increasing difficulty in the following categories: make it plural, part of speech search, adjectives and adverbs, and spell it with the suffix. He did a great job and needed some help with the adverbs. We followed up on our study of alliteration with the fun rhyming book, Chips & Cheese & Nana’s Knees! We read various examples of alliteration and discussed that it is generated from the same sounds at the beginning of the word. Finally, as we have been learning about taking care of God’s creation, we watched some short informational videos about marine debris (what it is, where it comes from, and the negative effects it creates). We saw how trash in the ocean deeply impacts its inhabitants.
