THE THREE QUESTIONS by Jon Muth;IF PIGS COULD FLY by Bruce Lansky
Lesson Outline
Jonathan and I read the picture book THE THREE QUESTIONS. I then discussed how to do a book talk. I modeled one and walked Jonathan through one for the book. Jonathan did a great job.
We spent some time on discussing how you should begin a speech. We talked about how you should say something to capture the audience's attention. We then discussed how to do an informative speech. Jonathan did one on elephants. He used his I-pad to research. He did a good job. We then talked about how to give a demonstration speech. Jonathan gave me a good one on how to build a lego model. We then read a few poems from the poetry book. Reading poetry is considered oral interpretation in the Public Speaking world.
Religion: We wrapped up our lesson on The Three Days today with Jonathan matching the pictures to statements about praying to the cross, remembering that Jesus gave himself to us, and how we remember our Baptism. Jonathan then took his Unit 3 test in which he scored a 9/10. He matched phrases to complete a sentence and then he marked statements indicating whether or not they reflected Baptism or Penance. Language Arts: This morning we finished our journey with Jack and Annie in our novel, Afternoon on the Amazon! We read how we they escaped danger with the help of a monkey and were given a mango as the second (of 4) items needed to help Morgan le Fay get released from the spell she is under. We made predictions throughout our reading. Jonathan practiced his spelling words from the novel in preparation for his test in our next session. We then had fun with a crossword puzzle reviewing vocabulary from the book such as crackling, conservation, and climate. Finally, we reviewed alliteration and had fun thinking of creative ways to call each day of the week.
Today, Jonathan took a virtual tour of the nation's top 5 national parks using a 360 degree virtual website. When he was finished, he completed an activity about our national symbols.
Jonathan started his lesson by hearing the book, The Spider Grows Up. After hearing about the aspects of the life cycle of a spider, Jonathan reviewed the words as molting, adult, eggs, sac, spiderlings. Joanathan watched the video about Tricky Spiders. This video showed four ways in which spiders catch their prey. Jonathan listed these on his paper: He listed the use of a spider web; a spider net made to catch prey; a long spinner line used to swing onto a branch; a trap door, and a spider who walks on water to catch a fish. Jonathan continued his lesson by listening to a story, Come On, Rain by Karen Hesse. It helped to define the experience of a rainstorm. This portion of the lesson was centered around weather and rain. Jonathan started an essay about a rainstorm. He was able to use the words Nimbus cloud to mean rain cloud. Jonathan worked on good sentence structure. We will continue his work next week. Jonathan shows great interest in his work and good participation.
We began with our daily language review for Wednesday and Thursday. We worked on proofreading including capitalization, punctuation, verb agreement, and continued focus on possessives. We also discussed the sentence types of declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory. For literature today, we began with practice of our novel based spelling words. Jonathan is doing a great job with these! We then read chapters 3 through 5 of our novel, Afternoon of the Amazon. We are working on reading fluency and not skipping lines in our shared reading task. We discussed the actions of Jack and Annie and how they must be feeling! Jonathan answered questions to assess his recall and comprehension of the book. To wrap up our session, we enjoyed looking at some pictures of piranhas as our characters faced these creatures in our story.
Jonathan and I continued with the folded surprise drawings. We challenged each other with an outside door and an inside surprise.
We brainstormed ideas for more drawings. (zoos, farms, museums, etc.)
Jonathan started his lesson by listening to a video on a book called Diary of a Spider. We reviewed the facts that spiders are not insects. We learned that spiders help to keep the insect population balanced. Jonathan knew that a spider is an Arachnid and not an insect. He told me that a spider has eight legs and an insect has six legs. Jonathan worked on a short essay about spiders. We discussed how the spider makes the web. Jonathan did research with me about how the web comes from a special sac on the abdomen of the spider. Jonathan volunteered to finish his essay and add a drawing after our class today.
