Math: Today for Saxon math 101 we focused on geometric solids. We watched a Brain Pop Jr. learning video to support the material. We labeled the cone, cube, sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, and pyramid. We examined the features of the cube and pyramid. Her Guided Class Practice / Homework activity tasked her with subtraction word problems, estimating, sharing items equally, naming the pictured geometric solid, reading and answering questions from a graph, solving mixed addition and subtraction problems, and multiplication x 10. She also completed 50 fact practice problems subtracting with – 7 and -8. Bible: Sadee practiced her Bible memory verse. We also read the Bible story of David the Outlaw. David was in hiding from his father-in-law Saul. Saul found where David was and although David had a chance to kill Saul, he showed him mercy, thus leading to Saul becoming overcome with guilt and recognizing his poor behavior.
ELA: We began with spelling practice in which Sadee wrote her spelling words two times each in her notebook. We worked together to generate a question and a sentence using a spelling word in each. For her phonics and language textbook work Sadee worked with -sion, matched words with their contractions, added suffixes (-s and -ed) in which some words needed a double consonant, completed words with a double consonant in the middle (such as pepper, pillow, and yellow), marked special sounds in words, wrote two sentences about summer using a word bank, and finally, listed four toys she has at home and wrote a sentence about each one. We reread her story for the week, Bread and Jam for Frances. We are working for increased fluency as Sadee gains more familiarity with the words. We did a little extra focus on stopping at periods. Finally, Sadee spent a little time on her school program, typingclub.com

Lesson Outline
Sadee completed her spelling homework. She read a book about George Washington. As we read the book, we discussed the story details, as well as, noting new vocabulary words. We completed a calendar for the month of March, noting important dates and Holidays. She made a homemade Barometer and learned how to read it and predict the weather.

Sadee watched a video this morning entitled, "I Can Eat a Rainbow - Read Aloud," which reinforced information about healthy foods. She then took her time on a penmanship page about fruits. I learned that plums are her favorite fruit! She then worked on an activity for which she traced words relating to food material. Sadee finished her academic work for the day working and coloring in a flip book which consolidated gains acquired about the benefits of the food groups.

Today, I introduced a new project to Sadee. We will be picking an artist to study from a list of famous artists. She chose Claude Monet and she chose to remake his Lillie’s painting using soft pastels and another one of his sunset paintings to remake using acrylic paint. Afterwards, she will complete a small artist report of 3 interesting facts about Claude Monet.

Math: Today we began with a review of various concepts we’ve covered over the past few weeks. Sadee then completed written assessment 19. This covered concepts such as adding money problems, using clues to reduce facts and find a target item, drawing time, fractional parts, reading a pictograph, and solving two-digit by two-digit equations. Sadee had one minor error with forgetting to add her one that she carried over. We then tackled Saxon lesson 100. Facts in focus for this lesson are -8. We used the learning wrap ups to see how as the minuend goes up, differences also go up, creating a pattern when writing in sequence. The lesson also focused on using a table to see patterns. We practiced two examples which utilized counting by 2s and counting by 5s. Bible: We practiced Sadee’s memory verse for this week, Ephesians 2:10. We then read the Bible story of how Saul turns against David due to jealousy and envy. ELA: We began with Sadee’s spelling words for the week. Lesson 25 focuses on adding suffixes to words that end with silent e (i.e. hope, hopes, hoped, and hoping). Sadee worked in her textbook to complete sentences using the correct form of the words. We then moved on to her phonics and language lessons. These textbook pages focused on -tion and -sion, adding various suffixes to words in which the root words do not change, finding root words, identifying contractions, and changing “y” to “i” and adding -er or -est. Additionally, she wrote two sentences to tell how she can help her mother at home and then read questions to find answers in the illustrated picture. To tie into her science studies, we read the book Bread and Jam for Frances. We discussed how Frances was feeling as she would only eat bread and jam and how her family began to treat her. We also made predictions along the way! We are working on oral reading with fluency and expression. Additionally, we read chapter 4 in Magic Tree House book 2, The Knight at Dawn. Sadee wrote answers to comprehension questions for follow-up. Finally, we did a little extra practice with compound words. Sadee was provided with three words and she had to choose which two go together to make a new word. She then wrote the new words.

We started a new topic today - food groups. We watched two videos that introduced Sadee to the topic of the different food groups and examples of which foods belonged in each. Sadee absorbed the information well, as demonstrated by her response to queries on the two activities on which she worked. Sadee took her time writing her answers, and had fun reviewing a sheet showing examples of several examples of different types of food on which she indicated her preference and dislikes - and adding comments alongside those she loved. After finishing her work, we took a few minutes to step outside and feed the cardinals and squirrels some 'grains.' Sadee knew in which food group the seeds belonged. We spotted three cardinals and managed to take a picture before they flew off. We enjoyed a fun and productive Monday morning. I did not forget to compliment Sadee on her delightful performance in the talent show Friday night.

Math: Sadee practiced double digit addition with carrying by rolling a ten-sided die to generate her own numbers to create equations. After completing all six equations, she wrote the sums in order from greatest to least. She also completed her Saxon math homework lesson 99. This tasked her with a subtraction word problem, adding with carrying, money, fractional parts, estimating height, and comparing / balancing equations. ELA: This morning Sadee began our language arts work with her weekly spelling test. This list included words with suffix endings such as rub, rubs, and rubbed. Sadee did a great job, scoring a 100% on the spelling and then missing one word on the dictation. She then completed her weekly journal. This week she wrote about their science topic focusing on healthy foods and junk foods. She met all of her rubric requirements, with the exception of a missing capital letter. For Fun Friday we reviewed compound words with a Bingo game! We also sorted noun-verb-adjective cards. We enjoyed reading the first three chapters in the Magic Tree House book 2, The Knight at Dawn. In our shared reading, I am modeling expression and decoding challenging words. Sadee is doing a terrific job with her fluency and rereading (or asking for help) as needed. After reading each chapter, we completed a mix of oral and written discussion questions. Sadee then began putting some words from the book into alphabetical order. We will continue this activity as we read more of the book. Finally, Sadee practiced her dance with her sister for the talent show this evening. This provided her with a good opportunity to practice where she’ll be performing.

Sadee came in fresh-faced and ready to work. She practiced her spelling words on the wipe board. She added suffixes to root words ending with single consonants, correctly doubling the consonant before adding a suffix that began with a vowel. Next, Sadee worked on compound words and contractions, using books from her library to find/identify the words. Sadee and I took a quick break and went to the playground. We took pictures of a beautiful bird that we spotted and watched the squirrels. Sadee then worked on her subtraction math sheet, completing 50 questions with 100% accuracy. We finished up our session feeding the squirrels outside with peanuts as reinforcement for her good work.
