Lesson Outline
This morning, Sadee observantly found a mistake on her penmanship page - a word that had been omitted, and she corrected it when writing it over. Additionally, she correctly wrote it as a contraction. I was very impressed, although not surprised, by her attention to detail. Sadee resourcefully improvised to create the color aqua by combining blue and green from the colors in her crayon box while working on another activity coloring a picture of Uncle Sam. She also worked on her math skills, subtracting the numbers 5 and 6. Sadee enjoys the challenge of the time constraint and completes her assignment within the 5 minutes allotted. In fact, Sadee has significantly improved her speed without compromising accuracy while performing arithmetic problems. She completed 2 pages of subtraction exercises, obtaining 100% correct on the first page in 2 minutes and 52 seconds, and 100% on the second page in 2 minutes 35 seconds! WOW! We went outside a bit before her next class as a reward for her diligent work skills and academic performance.

Math: This morning we reviewed a few concepts and then Sadee took her Saxon Math Assessment 16. She did a nice job with only three minor calculation errors. We continued on with Saxon lesson 91 with additional practice of subtracting two-digit by two-digit numbers requiring “borrowing”. Each problem was presented as a money word-problem and we reviewed each piece of the story to confirm the language for a subtraction problem. Additionally, we completed Saxon lesson 92. This lesson was an introduction to multiplying by 10! We worked through grouping items by 10 and some practice problems. Sadee then completed the Lesson 92 Guided Practice work which provided a spiral review of tasks such as least to greatest (and identifying a target number “between” two numbers), using comparison symbols, adding two-digit numbers with regrouping, adding three two-digit numbers, and measurement. The lesson also incorporated tasks with our new skills of “borrowing” in subtraction and multiplication by 10. ELA: We began our reading work with spelling. Sadee wrote her spelling words two times in her notebook and we generated a sentence and a question using a spelling word in each. Next, she tackled her Language textbook work. She used provided words and/or pictures to generate sentences (which we are boosting with adjectives) and she wrote rhyming words for 10 words. For grammar, we read a list of sentences and identified nouns, verbs, and adjectives in each. We are examining how some words can be adjectives or nouns (for example, mud puddle, baby bottle, American flag, etc.). Our literature work brought us back 65 million years ago to the time of the dinosaurs with “Dinosaurs Before Dark”. Sadee did a nice job working to read this challenging text fluently. She answered follow- up comprehension questions through recall and with support from finding evidence in the text. Bible: Sadee is doing a nice job with recitation of her Bible verse. We then enjoyed a Bible story of Samuel I 4-6 in which the Ark of the Covenant is captured. We read how the Philistines were punished for stealing it and how they returned it to the Israelites. We wrapped up our day with some patriotic songs as Sadee is learning about American symbols. Following some YouTube sing-a-longs, we sang “God Bless America” and began working on clearly singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”.

Math: Lesson 89 focused on subtracting two-digit numbers. We worked through various examples using dimes and pennies, to help with the concept of “borrowing” as we “trade” a dime for 10 pennies using the coins. Her Guided Class Practice tasked her with measurement, word problems with adding three numbers, using a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast, filling in numbers to compare values, place value, and adding and subtracting various equations. Additionally, we practiced time to the quarter hour by reading and writing for an analog clock. ELA: Sadee began her reading work with a Language textbook activity. She was tasked with writing a sentence and drawing a picture to match for items such as: something in her backyard, a pet she’d like to have, her bicycle, her favorite color (and why), and tell what her family did on Saturday. She also practiced doubling the final consonant and adding -er to words such as clap, flat, and zip. We listened to a read-aloud of “The American Flag” by Lloyd G. Douglas and enjoyed charting nouns, verbs, and adjectives throughout the book. Sadee then wrote a sentence using one noun, verb, and adjective combination. For literature, we read chapters 3 & 4 in her book, Dinosaurs Before Dark. We discussed vocabulary terms such as soaring, sloping, boldly, and examine. I shared with her the concept of using “context clues” and using some of the words + inferring to help her with new words. We analyzed the words used in sentences to help attain the meaning. Additionally, we worked on reading with expression and understanding ways the author created expression with dialogue. Features such as a hyphen or an ellipsis were examples found in our reading. Bible: Sadee was introduced to her new memory verse for the week (Psalm 33:12), “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” We also read about Ruth and Naomi from her children’s Bible. Finally, we read Samuel I 1-3 about how Hannah called to God to give her a child and she, in turn, would give his life for service. We read and watched a short video for additional support of how God calls on Samuel.
