As I entered the classroom, Ben immediately told me he was tired and didn't want to do any talking. I told him that there were two things I wanted to discuss- the WIST and how I would modify it, and how learning tools to help in his reading were not that 'fun' and would take effort on his part but worth the outcome.

Ben left to use the bathroom and left one more time during the session. I began to read the first chapter in the book he chose with little response from him. He was hungry and ate most of his lunch.

I've tried to bond with Ben through mutual interests and offer him a multitude of options. He continues to refuse to work and gets agitated when I ask him to engage. I am not sure if this is the right fit for us. His lack of response to work is not productive for either Ben or for me. My goal is to give him the tools he needs to improve his reading skills, but it's impossible to accomplish without his cooperation. We start our morphology study this week where I can give him assignments to do on his own. I will keep you informed regarding his reaction.

The assessment was based on Ben's concerns that he did not have enough education that addressed his learning differences. When Ben saw the form, he stated he could not do it. I made several suggestions to minimize the visual difficulty, but he was not willing to attempt the diagnostic. Because he refused to work, I suggested he speak with Megan since he had an established relationship with her.

Ben complained that he was still not feeling well but had to come to school. When we got to the section where he was asked to write an entry mimicking the tone and style of the author, he told me he can't do that. He also complained that he needed more help for his dyslexia and dysgraphia.
I told him what I noticed in his Reading Inventory (reading through punctuation and difficulty with words that had affixes), and he agreed. I told him that I ordered a program (Morpheme Magic) for him and that I can administer the WIST spelling test tomorrow to address any difficulty with spelling patterns.
