STEAM: Eggsellent Egg Crate Challenge
Lesson Outline
We went outside and started by launching Eggbert the egg in his parachute in drops of six feet, eight feet, eight feet seven inches, and 10 feet 10 inches. He survived the flights. Then we dropped Jackson's egg 67 in his crate from several heights. 67 survived six feet, eight feet, and 10 feet drops. He also survived a 40 feet throw by Jackson. We had the measuring tape and measured the distances. For the 40 feet throw, Jackson had to add 25 feet plus 15 feet because the tape measure ends at 25 feet. Jackson's design was successful and protected 67 the egg.

STEAM: Eggsellent Egg Crate Challenge
Lesson Outline
I gave Cam an uncooked uncracked egg that he had to name. He named his egg Eggie Van Halen. His design challenge was to create an egg crate that will protect his egg from cracking once it is nestled securely inside its crate and dropped from various heights on the playground. He made a very secure crate out of yarn, shredded packing tissue, aluminum foil, and foil insulation for food. He dropped Eggie from an approximate height of 20 feet by throwing it into the air. Before we unveil Eggie to see if he is intact, Cam wants to do more drops as a group with Jackson and Remi

STEAM: Eggsellent Egg Crate Challenge
Lesson Outline
Remington finished his symmetrical butterfly design. Then I gave Remington an uncooked uncracked egg that he had to name. He named his egg Tim. His design challenge was to create an egg crate that will protect his egg from cracking once it is nestled securely inside its crate and dropped from various heights on the playground. We will measure the height distance in feet. Remington jumped right in utilizing the supplies in the art room. He used three toilet paper rolls, wool balls, cotton rounds, and tape and created his crate for Tim. He was focused and engaged!

Symmetrical Butterfly with Patterns
Lesson Outline
I tasked Jackson to create symmetrical patterns for each wing of a butterfly. The challenge is that the left wing: top and bottom and the right wing: top and bottom must be symmetrical or match. This art project supports critical and creative thinking. Jackson struggled a bit thinking of patterns. I gave him some pattern flashcards as references for ideas. After much encouragement, he tried a different pattern other than using two colors to color in half of the wing.

Lesson Comments
Jackson seemed engaged at the beginning of class, and then his enthusiasm and focus declined quite rapidly. He had his head down on his knee and would not engage with the lesson when I tried to encourage him with pattern flashcards. I am also encouraging him to be neater with his marking tools, as he scribbles in his colors.
