Creative writing, parts of speech, holiday activity
Lesson Outline
Hank and I began our session with a creative writing prompt, writing a story that takes place on another planet- he chose Venus. Hank was very creative with his illustration. We then completed a Christmas MadLibs, focusing on parts of speech. We ended our session with a holiday activity with his brother, Ben, creating a Christmas tree gum drop tower and decorating a cupcake, each.
Informational writing, grammar-pronouns, parts of speech
Lesson Outline
Hank and I began our session with grammar, focusing on pronouns in a Christmas story. We then focused on parts of speech, participating in a MadLibs. Hank chose the topic, "Holiday Fun." Hank continued working on his informational writing piece on salamanders. He completed his body paragraph three and his conclusion. I reviewed his rough draft. For his final draft, he wants to type it and add clip art. What a great idea!

Hank was focused today and enjoyed finishing his salamander informational writing piece. I prepared a creative writing prompt for Hank. However, he did not want to do it, which was fine. We continued working on his informational writing piece.
Hank read 6 paragraphs and identified the type of figurative language used in each. After a brief review, we read the next 5 chapters in 'Wonder.' Today's reading was all from Auggie's perspective, and we were able to compare his view of an important event with Via's very different view. We also looked closely to determine the author's reason for including Auggie's dog's death in the story. After some discussion, Hank concluded that this chapter brought about a change in Auggie. He did some growing through this sad event.
Creative writing, informational writing, parts of speech, plural nouns
Lesson Outline
Hank and I began our session with a creative writing prompt, if you could do one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? He stated "brownies". We then completed a MadLibs, working on parts of speech. Next, I read aloud what Hank had thus far in his informational writing piece. Hank began his second body paragraph- salamander's habitat. He reread his story to review about a salamander's habitat. We finished our session with an online game, focusing on plural nouns.

Hank is, at times, disrespectful. He talks rudely sometimes. I try to keep him engaged, which for the most part time he seems to enjoy the time we have. I like teaching him. I just hope he is enjoying it. We can keep an eye on how he is acting in the next couple of weeks. Maybe, you can have a discussion with him and see how he is liking it or if we need to make some changes.
Hank and I are attempting to finish 'Wonder' before the winter break, so we spent our whole session reading. We read the last three chapters from Justin's perspective and began reading again from Auggie's perspective. As we read, we noted the use of figurative language, and we read closely to understand Justin and his relationship with the Pullman family.
