Today's session consisted of heel to toe walking outside and in the hallways. Session also incorporated sensory processing and balance exercises. Student intermittently required verbal cues as reminder to walk with heel contact. Good immediate carryover. Student tolerated all exercises well.
Richard shared some advice he would give to incoming students - an assignment he was given yesterday before he left for his eye therapy appointments. He said he would tell students to "just have fun - but follow the rules." We also discussed leadership qualities and reviewed the major accomplishments of some people in history we have covered in class who are considered heroes. Richard was asked to reflect on those qualities he deemed most important and asked if he sees any in himself. I recognized those that earned him the role of diplomat at Batt and those which he possesses that have helped set a good example for others at school.
Richard was seen for his last OT session with this therapist for the school year. He was able to read simple directions with minimal verbal assistance to follow a multiple step cooking recipe. He demonstrated good executive functioning skills, fine motor and bilateral hand skills throughout the session. Richard has demonstrated significant improvement this year, including fine motor strength and coordinating, visual perceptual and motor skills, gross motor coordinating and motor planning, oculomotor skills, sensory processing and overall confidence. Richard continues to struggle with some executive functioning skills and organization. An end of the year progress report will be sent to the school including VMI results and goal progress.
This morning, Richard used the puzzle game Kanoodle to challenge his spatial reasoning, build problem-solving skills, and enhance critical and strategic thinking skills. Richard used the 12 puzzle pieces to solve 2-D rectangular and the more challenging 3-D pyramid puzzles at multiple difficulty levels.
Richard was seen in his room for a 45-minute treatment session. His session focuses on improving his postural control, integration of retained reflexes, visual motor skills and integration, fine motor skills, dexterity, manipulation, ocular motor development and graphomotor development/keyboarding as an alternative means to written communication. Finished standardized testing today using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, 2nd Edition. It is intended for use by practitioners and researchers as a discriminative and evaluative measure to characterize motor performance, specifically in the areas of fine manual control, manual coordination, body coordination, and strength and agility. Richard participated well and was able to complete all tasks presented. During the bilateral coordination subtest Richard demonstrated slight difficulty with separating his UE movements from his LE movements and with contralateral movements. Test scores to follow.
Richard focused on his pencil grip, his posture, his placement of letters, and the position of his words, as he wrote an informative and explanatory story.

Continued working today on writing in cursive for Mother's Day coupon book. Richard was able to write his name in script; however, relies on OT to talk him through (with auditory clues from Script Island) writing the letters. We continued working on refinement of cursive and Richard was taught high connectors today.
