This morning, Kellan and I reviewed how to create equivalent fractions using multiplication and division. Then, we began to work on how to compare fractions. Kellan used quick pictures and fraction strips to help compare fractions using comparison symbols. We also discussed how to use our prior lessons on creating equivalent fractions to help compare fractions with unlike denominators.
Kellan read about erosion caused by glaciers and people today. He watched a video about how glaciers cause erosion. He wrote two sentences about how glaciers and people cause erosion, and we verbally discussed the phenomenon.
Today, we began by checking and correcting last night's homework on adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. Then, Kellan practiced using multiplication and division to fill in the missing numerators or denominators of shown equivalent fractions. Finally, we played a few more rounds of the adding multi-digit numbers fluency game, ending today with a tied score.
We read the short story, "They're Made Out of Meat," by Terry Bisson. It's a sci-fi story with a dialogue between two aliens discussing the humans they found. We focused on vocabulary to increase understanding of the text.
