Final Movie -
Will was challenged with making a short stop-action movie. He was instructed to set up his camera with the tripod, to photograph ‘Mr. brain-dead’ (a small doll) moving across his desk. He was then challenged with downloading, renaming, animating, editing, converting to video, and adding audio to the images using three software apps: Name Changer, Photoshop, and iMovie. Will also recorded some audio from the internet to add to his film, titled ‘The Walking Brain Dead’.

How to -
Will and I continued his journal of instruction with directions how to prepare a batch of image files for email. First he had to reduce the size of the files using a batch action in Photoshop. We then worked with
screenshots. Will was directed to find a map of Lynn University, and was instructed on how to collect a
screenshot of the map. He was challenged to collect other screen images. I then had him write a short story of his plans to attend this university, and showed him how to add his screenshots to his essay. Will kept notes on the step-by-step process to do these processes.

How to -
Will and I started a journal of instruction to help Will with a movie project he expects to work on over the summer. We started with how to re-name a batch of image files using the name changer software. Will wrote out the steps as we performed the process. We then did the same for converting images into animation in Photoshop.

Animation -
Will was tasked with using the puppet warp tool to reshape the lower jaw of a person, in a portrait. He made several different iterations of this process. We used the timeline function of Photoshop, to covert the images into an animation. Will repeated the process until we had a 5 second film, where a person in a photo, appeared to be speaking.

Photoshop puppet warp tool -
I took some photos of Will, and we used them to use Photoshop. First Will was instructed to change the color of his shirt. He practiced using the magic wand and paint bucket tool. He also reviewed how to change the color of the paint used in the paint bucket tool. We then used the puppet warp tool to move portions of the photos. This tool allowed Will to move the arms and legs of the photo subject.

Speed, F-stop, and ISO -
Will and I engaged in a conversation about how photographers learned their craft prior to the digital age. We discussed how they would choose film with light sensitivity, selected for the project at hand. They used light meters to determine the amount of light for each exposure to determine the aperture or “F-stop” and adjusted the shutter speed on the spot. We then reviewed the ways a digital camera addresses these concerns in an automatic manner, and how to work without the auto function. We examined a series of photos and discussed how certain effects were achieved. Will took a test on vocabulary.

Speed, aperture, and ISO -
Will and I reviewed the importance of ISO (light sensitivity), shutter speed, and aperture. We examined how these three settings on a camera can make a difference. We then tested his auto settings and compared the general auto setting to the pre-set options available on his camera. We took portrait photos, to compare the results of using different settings. We then took photos of moving objects and investigated the benefits of a motor drive and single shot settings. Finally we used his telephoto lens and compared settings for landscape and floral images compared to the general automatic setting. Homework: rename the photos from today. Study new vocabulary.

Firmware and talent show -
Will was tasked with finding and following directions to check the firmware on his camera, and update his system. We used the data card from his camera to move the updated firmware from the Nikon website to his camera. We discussed the function and purpose of firmware. We then examined and edited his photos from the talent show, preparing them to be submitted to a yearbook committee.
