Video project -
Will finished his video and presented it to Miss Judie. After she saw the project, Will decided that the ending was too dark, and needed to be changed. He added some comical sound effects and a text slide to the end. We then finalized the video. He will show the re-worked project on Tuesday.

Photography and filmmaking -
Will wanted to discuss how sound is used in movies. We talked about how, in most cases, the dialogue is recorded after the scene was filmed. This allows for clean recordings. We also discussed how Will, at the beginning of this class, was convinced that the each new project was ‘too hard’ and afterwards he understood that although there was a lot of work to do, it was not as hard as expected. We also spoke about different film projects that he may wish to attempt in the future.

We continue to tweak the sound effects that will enhance the title slides on the video project. We chose a collection of effects for the third title, and Will is searching for the best sound effect for the last slide. I think this is a very good first attempt at movie making. Will wants to make the 'great American movie', and I must keep reminding him this is his first attempt, designed to give him experience with the software, and the processes of editing video, editing sound, and creating content. The result is surreal, but I think it is really quite good.

Will and I examined his expose’ of “Nature in the Hurley Yard”. He has a couple of excellent photos that will be printed for the wall. . We then added sound effects that will enhance his titles on the video project. We chose an effect for the first title, and Will chose a music piece to tie the entire project together. He is still unsatisfied with the audio mash-up we had put together for the final scene, and worked to improve the effect.

Video project -
Today we added titles to Will’s video. Will chose several different styles to use in the opening credits of the short film. He had to also give the project a name, and we worked on several ideas. Will was also unsatisfied with the audio mash-up we had put together for the final scene, and worked to improve the effect.

Will started to work on his video, but became sidetracked into a conversation about finding a passion in life. He was keen to speak about working in the movie business, in some capacity, because he watches lots of movies. I suggested working on the video, and others like it, would be an excellent way to prepare for working behind the scenes. We discussed how audio recordings are often made in the studio, especially when the visual was captured in an exotic location (compared to a back lot). Will likes to talk about films that have been recognized for their sound or photography.

Will selected an audio file available for free on the internet, and downloaded it to his computer. He then imported this file to add to his video project. As always, there were some issues placing the file into the correct video clip. We reviewed the research, we had done last week, on how to use an audio file over a transition in the video. We will apply what we learned during our next class.

birds and nature -
Will attached the telephoto lens to his camera and we walked around the school to photograph birds. He found some crows and a starling to photograph. I asked him to photograph some flowers and the garden. We returned to his office, to discuss how he experiences nature around his house. He was quite sure he could not photograph a mocking bird in his yard (as per his previous assignment). Homework; create an expose’ of only five photos, depicting nature in the Hurley yard. Due Monday.
