Will and I used a photo of Charlie, which Will had taken last week. We used the wand tool to isolate Charlie and the paintbrush tool to change the background to white the background. We then used the keystroke shortcut to change the color palet, and the cut tool to remove the color from Charlie. We ended up with a silhouette. We then looked up how this was an art form before photography was popular.

Will and I examined his homework and discussed editing photo collections. We then discussed the work he is doing in his language arts class, with the book ‘to kill a mockingbird’. We decided to try to photograph some birds. We retreated to the back of the school, where despite the some excessive ambient sounds, we found a mocking bird singing. Will used the telephoto lens to capture some images of the mockingbird. We walked around the school, looking for other birds, but we were unsuccessful. Homework: Will is to try to capture photos of birds, using his telephoto lens. This assignment is due next Monday.

Will selected a audio file available for free on the internet, and downloaded it to his computer. He then imported this file to add to his video project. As always, there were some issues placing the file into the correct video clip. We researched how to use an audio file over a transition in the video. We will apply what we learned during our next class.

Will was tasked with photographing some of the students for the yearbook. He was given a short list of subjects that are missing and used this time to gather these images. We then examined one photo and used Photoshop to convert the image to a silhouette.

Will chose a sound effect from IMovie, and added sound to his project. Once he had chosen the vault door opening sound, he worked on making the sound connect to the video in sync. We talked about how much of a movie soundtrack is created in the studio, but viewers believe the recording was collected live during filming.

I had given Will’s substitutes a list of 30 subjects for Will to photograph. He was able to fulfill most of the assignment in class, but had a few to work on over the weekend as homework. I read the list and he showed me his photos. He did take many images of the same subject so I assigned another homework assignment. Homework: Find your best photo for each of the assigned subjects, and place them in the folder on your desktop. You may use more than one, but no more than three photos for each of the 30.

Today Will had the assignment of taking photos of many different things. He was instructed that they should be interesting and he should use good composition. He wanted to understand more about the word composition so we looked at suggestions on the internet that showed photos with different methods of composition. So the first item was to take a photo of a door. Not the whole door but a portion of the door. This took some time as Will and I went outside and walked all around looking for interesting and different doors. He was able to get some good partial shots of doors. For the remainder of the session he took several shots of a person sitting at a desk. He can finish this assignment at home over the weekend.

Will continued to work on the video that we made last week. He opened the iMovie software on his computer and started a project. He selected the same ‘seed’ video and used a star wars trailer to enhance the story. He explored the different sound effects, transition effects, and titles he can add to the project. We also examined the different maps and backgrounds he can apply to his project.
