FOUNDATIONAL SESSION
Lesson Outline
Abby and I introduced outselves and discussed her goals and why photography is important to her. We determined that she is enthusiast and wishes to deepen her mastery with artistic approach to learning. Over the course of our time together we reviewed her prior course in photography and the things she liked and disliked. She was eager to have me support her creative expression. Technical level was reviewed and she is at intermediate level. Discussion of what camera she has been using and needs to use going forward took place. I advised her about the use MANUAL setting on any camera she uses except her i Phone. We reviewed how she backs-up her work and suggestions were made for future archiving of her work in progress. Abby has been asked to keep a diary record of her photography...minimum of 25 photos a day. We talked about visual elements...frame, light, moment, color, tonality, and subject. We went outside to the playground for a few minutes and had Abby take some spontaneous photos and discussed what she was thinking with each. ASSIGNMENT: Shoot 25 photos a day and pick the best one for each day and bring to next session for discussion... Get magazines and review for advertisements with ads. Clip out 5 that resonate with her and bring to next meeting for discussion...

Will presented his homework, and we discussed the subject of a photo, and how to identify the subject, or make it more important than other items in the image. Will also was curious about bringing his camera on his next trip to explore different college campuses. Although I did not assign photos from his trip as homework, I encouraged him to use the camera to help in his selection process. We discussed how this could be accomplished. I then presented him with a book entitled: “Nikon 5000 for Dummies”. After assuring him that I did not think he was a dummy, I explained that the book was about his camera and therefore could be used as a handy tool. Homework: Use chapter 2 of the text to list the name and purpose of the icon exposure settings on his camera.

Will turned in his homework assignment and we discussed how in each photo, he could recognize he subject easily. We explored how, just as easily, we could change the subject, by just cropping the image to change the frame. Will did not include a second subject to his photos, so he was asked to do so for next week. Will mentioned that his telephoto lens was not working well, so we examined his equipment. I noticed that all his lenses could do with a cleaning. I provided instruction in the proper way to clean a camera and lenses. As we cleaned his equipment, I was able to get the long lens to work, but noticed there was a rattle inside the lens. This is a bad sign and he should be prepared for that lens to fail at some point in the near future. Homework: submit five photos where the subject is framed within a photo, and second object is within the frame.

Will showed me how he has progressed using Adobe Lightroom, and we discussed how sometimes the true color of a scene is difficult to capture with a camera. We reviewed how light bends when it hits a lens, and therefore there is some quality missed in photography. Adobe Lightroom allows a photo artist to re-gain some of those qualities. We also examined his progress in editing his recent photo collections. Throughout our discussions, I had Will identify the subject of his photos, and how someone else would identify the subject. We examined some instances where he did very well at capturing his subject, and some photos where the subject is lost in the photo. Homework: submit five photos where the subject is framed within a photo, and another object is present.

Will and I discussed the option of making a video he could post, as a means to introduce himself to college admissions. We decided this project is something he may or may not be interested in attempting, so he will give it some thought. Will then installed the software Adobe Lightroom, on his computer. He used some images from last week, to explore the properties of this software. We discussed when he would want to manipulate the saturation of color, the brightness, and exposure of an image. We also talked about how this software would be a beneficial addition to his photography routine, and we compared Apple Photos software, to the Adobe options. Will was quizzed on the anatomy of a Nikon 4000D camera. Finally we worked on editing his photos.

Will and I shared our summer vacation stories. Will described his trip to Colorado, and showed me the photos of the forest fire that he witnessed. He then told me about his trips to visit different colleges, and shared his opinions of each. We also talked about his summer school classes and his use of the photography software Lightroom. I showed Will how to use this program on his own computer, and explained how it is a part of the Photoshop suite of programs he already owns. We also shared stories about our families and pets and finally plans for this year’s photography class.
