Mercer's snake drawing is remarkable. He is learning colored pencils so fast. I am still working with him on making sure his pencil marks match the direction of the form but that is an advanced concept.
Today's lesson focused on life skills—Mercer reviewed video clips and activities about respect. He learned that respect has two parts: 1) having respect for someone because of how their actions impact others and 2) showing respect by changing your actions to be sure you don't have a negative impact. Mercer completed activities that tested his understanding of respect, how to show it, and why it is important.

Today's lesson focused on President Harding. Mercer read material and watched video clips about Harding's presidency. He learned that Harding appointed a mixture of outstanding leaders and unscrupulous politicians waiting for an opportunity to line their pockets to his cabinet and that Harding was a notoriously poor judge of character who expected his appointees to repay his trust with integrity. He was to be deeply disappointed. Mercer read that most of Harding's goals were more in keeping with the Old Guard Republican views associated with: a higher protective tariff (Fordney-McCumber), lower taxes on business, and a sharp reduction in the number of immigrants allowed to enter the United States from southern and eastern Europe.

Today's lesson focused on former president Calvin Coolidge. Mercer read material that detailed facts about how Coolidge came onto office and how he restored trust in America. He learned that Coolidge took the oath of office from his father, a notary public, by the light of a kerosene lamp at 2:47 AM on August 3 at the family home in Plymouth, Vermont. He inherited an administration mired in scandal. Cautiously, quietly, and skillfully, Coolidge rooted out the perpetrators and restored integrity to the executive branch.

Mercer began class with a jumping jack warmup. He completed 2 sets of 25. Next, he participated in a fun, competitive, and interactive game of ladder toss with his teacher while focusing on throwing technique, strength, and accuracy.
Lesson 5 Acceleration: We learned how motion changes with acceleration. Then we learned how acceleration is a vector and its relationship to velocity. Then we practiced calculating average acceleration. Next we learned that a decrease in velocity such as when a car slows down is called negative acceleration. Then we learned about acceleration in a circular motion which is called centripetal acceleration.
Assignment: Complete visual summary and lesson review at the end of the lesson.
