Lesson Outline
Today's lesson focused on David and Goliath. Mercer reviewed material that detailed the story of David and Goliath. He read about how Goliath was portrayed in the Bible and described as the Philistine giant slain by David, renowned for his courage. The Philistines had come up to make war against Saul, and this warrior came forth day by day to challenge to single combat. Mercer spent the remainder of class reviewing fun facts about Hebrew culture and listening to Hebrew music.

Lesson Outline
He took his spelling test which is in two parts this week. The first part is to spell his words correctly and the second part is to write 5 sentences as I dictate them selecting the correct spelling word to put in the blank. The sentences are graded on selecting the appropriate spelling word and in writing the sentences correctly using the proper punctuation and capitalization. We then reviewed his Wordly Wise words for his test on Monday. He took his book home to study the words and their meanings. He read a reading passage from the SSAT book and we discussed strategies on how to approach this type of reading activity to ensure he understands how to attack answering the questions effectively.

Lesson Outline
Lesson 3 Thermal Energy and Heat: We played a game where we determined whether the thermal energy was transferred through conduction, convection, or radiation. This helped us understand and be able to identify the thermal energy transfer in the atmosphere as well as the greenhouse effect.

We warmed up with combinations of single and double strokes, and then played all of the exercises from Lesson 9. We proceeded to play the combination study at the bottom of the page, which combines rhythms from the current and previous lessons.

Mercer did extremely well in class today! In fact, I would say this was the best class we have had in quite a while, if not ever. Mercer was very focused, his technique was good, and he played everything very, very well.

We warmed up with combinations of single and double strokes, and then reviewed some of the exercises from Lessons 7 and 8 on counting sixteenth notes and eighth notes. We then reviewed and played through Solo #3 as an application of all note subdivisions learned thus far.

Reading Comprehension Literature Wordly Wise Spelling SSAT Prep
Lesson Outline
He completed another practice essay for the SSAT test. Practicing the skills needed to decide on a topic, create a working outline, then write the essay leaving enough time to recheck his work before his time is up. We worked on a very difficult reading passage where he has to decide what is directly stated in the passage, understand what is implied, understand the author's use of specific words and phrases, and recognize the author's purpose, tone, mood, and character development. We reviewed spelling homework. He worked on an activity about simile.
