Lesson Outline
Mercer worked hard solving multi-digit subtraction problems that required regrouping. He also completed a few multiplication problems that involved multi-digit numbers being multiplied by one digit numbers.
We read and discussed chapter 1 of, "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler". We talked about the author, and reviewed vocabulary words from chapter one.
Today's lesson focused on Jean-Francois Champollion. Mercer read the material that detailed Champollion's early work and contributions and helped decipher hieroglyphics from the Rosetta Stone. Mercer participated in a discussion about the many years Champollion spent learning different languages and how significant his contributions were to understanding Egyptian life.

Mercer was tasked with using a ruler to make latitude and longitude lines over a map of the world. He then plotted the coordinates given to follow Santa's stops. East set of coordinates was on a different continent. Mercer identified and wrote the name of the continents. Given start and elapsed time for each stop, Mercer calculated the end time for the stops.
We discussed and worked on compound predicates. We read the first chapter of the literature book, "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler," discussing vocabulary words and story details.
