Causes of WWII
Lesson Outline
World War II began in 1939 when Adolf Hitler invaded Poland. In September 1940 the Axis Powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan, formed. The Allied Powers, Great Britain, the USSR, and the US, formed as a result of needing to combat the growing threat of the Axis Powers. World War II was caused by: 1) Failures of the League of Nations to maintain international peace, 2) A weakened China due to civil war, which allowed Japan to invade and take over,3) Unresolved anger from World War I and the Treaty of Versailles, 4) The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR)
Lesson Outline
The New Deal is the title given to legislation that created programs and agencies to alleviate the effects of the Great Depression. The New Deal was the largest expansion of the powers and scope of the U.S. Federal Government, creating agencies and programs that addressed the economic and social needs of Americans brought on by the Great Depression. Some New Deal programs programs were more successful than others. Overall, the New Deal helped alleviate some of the American suffering. It would not be until the U.S. entered into WWII that the Great Depression finally ended. The goal of President Roosevelt's foreign policy focused on moving the U.S. from isolation to intervention. By establishing diplomatic relations and opening trade markets with the USSR and Latin American through the "Good Neighbor Policy." Yet, with crisis growing in Europe and Asia, Roosevelt realized that America needed to intervene. After WWII began in 1939, Roosevelt campaigned for a strengthened American international presence. He supplied weapons to Britain and France and enacted the Lend-Lease Act which loaned arms to American allies. He also froze Japanese assets in America & limited trade with Japan. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Roosevelt officially entered the U.S. into WWII - that had already been raging for 3 years.
