Lesson Comments
Bella and Sam informed school they wouldn't be in until 9:45am today, I tried to connect with Bella via Teams for the beginning of class. She responded at 9:22am that they were leaving for school. Bella arrived to class at 9:50am. We had just enough time for me to give her the HW assignment for tonight and for her to let me know that she will create a slide presentation instead of a poster featuring Rosa Parks for the Black History celebration here at school this coming Friday.
We continued learning how to read music on lines and spaces using "Musescore" program, Bella playing the melodies on keyboard. We then began studying "intervals".
What was the Gilded Age?/Black History Month Presentation
Lesson Outline
We began with discussing Bella's choice of person to profile for the Black History Month presentation next week. Bella would like to research and present Rosa Parks. She is interested in making a poster about her, too. Since they don't have an operational printer at home, Bella wants to work on some of this poster with me in class next week. Bella obtained the poster board here at school and printed out quite a bit here at school to help her with her work on it over the weekend. Mark Twain & Charles Dudley Warner published a novel in 1873 called "The Gilded Age." The name-which refers to something covered with a thin layer of gold-became associated with America in the late 1800s. The Gilded Age was a time of extravagant wealth and the terrible poverty that lay underneath. The railroad barons became extravagantly wealthy. People with money could take advantage of the new burst of inventions between 1860 and 1890. In 1866, the first telegraph label was laid across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1876, Alexander Bell invented the telephone, the typewriter was invented in 1868 and the adding machine in 1888. We discussed the contributions of African American inventors and more new inventions. In the late 1890s, Henry Ford began experimenting with the automobile engine. Railroads were the first businesses to form corporations and other U.S. businesses began to incorporate, as well. The oil industry and the steel industries became huge, profitable organizations in the late 1870s.
Assignment
Work on presentation for Black History Month, read pp. 582-595 in text
Bella watched a video that contained practice problems that she solved while watching the video. Then she started working on the 3-3 reteach to build understanding worksheet packet and the activities that she didn't complete during the class she has to complete for homework.
Today, Bella read some paragraphs from two different parts of the book that she liked about cats.
We read part of a story about two sisters who get a cat. We read part of a story about Queen Victoria and her cat.
Bella did enjoy the story about Queen Victoria's cat more than the first story but still was not certain that this was the book for her.
After a quick mental break, Bella then read some biographical information about entrepreneur Elon Musk in Spanish. She said that she enjoyed this reading much more.
We will continue to look for written format media that interest her.
Today, Bella faced one of the more dreaded of all the quizzes in our Spanish 3 project. She was required to call on all of the information that she had learned regarding Imperfect v. Preterite for cumulative quiz.
She did struggle in some parts, but would recognize them as we worked on them.
3-3 Transforming Linear Functions – We learned the transforming linear functions vocabulary: horizontal and vertical translation, stretches and compressions. We learned to graph transformations of linear functions by identifying the effect of replacing f(x) with f(x) + k, f(x + k), kf(x), f(kx) for specific values of k. Next we interpreted the key features of a graph of a linear function and used them to write the function that the graph represents.
Assignment: Complete the assigned problems for homework.
