What was the "Gilded Age?"
Lesson Outline
Mark Twain & Charles Dudley Warner published a novel in 1873 called "The Gilded Age." The name-which refers to something covered with a thin layer of gold-became associated with America in the late 1800s. The Gilded Age was a time of extravagant wealth and the terrible poverty that lay underneath. The railroad barons became extravagantly wealthy. People with money could take advantage of the new burst of inventions between 1860 and 1890. In 1866, the first telegraph label was laid across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1876, Alexander Bell invented the telephone, the typewriter was invented in 1868 and the adding machine in 1888. A small box camera was invented in 1888 and the vacuum cleaner in 1899. We discussed Thomas Edison's inventions from his workshop in 1870s NJ as well as the contributions of African American inventors. In the late 1890s, Henry Ford began experimenting with the automobile engine. Railroads were the first businesses to form corporations and other U.S. businesses began to incorporate, as well. The oil industry and the steel industries became huge, profitable organizations in the late 1870s.

Preterite and Imperfect
Lesson Outline
Bella was walked through some of the new meanings that verbs in Spanish can take on when they are conjugated in the preterite. As an example, we conjugated conocer in the preterite and showed example sentences of how its meaning changed slightly to met - as in the sentence, I met Thomas two days ago.

Bella then worked on several sets of problems dealing with this concept.

We also continued our research of meaningful media to interact with in Spanish.

Bella mentioned that she liked a book that she read dealing with life in Northern Korea.

Based upon this, we discussed a movie called "La Historia Oficial."

We also looked at other possible books for her to read. However, the book that we chose last time seems to still be the first choice.

Westward Expansion: The Homestead Act of 1862 & the Frontier Thesis
Lesson Outline
In the middle of the 19th century, America essentially stopped at the Mississippi River, with a wide gap from there to California. But then miners poured in, hoping to uncover gold and other metals. They were followed by corporations who finished what they had started. The mining industry opened different areas of the west and blazed many trails for others to follow.

The Homestead Act of 1862 and other similar legislation encouraged more settlement by giving away free land in the Great Plains to individuals. Like the miners, many of them failed, but this didn't stop the rush of people into new land. Ranchers pushed even farther west than the homesteaders, opening up the Rocky Mountains. By 1890, the gap had closed; the frontier was erased. This prompted historian Frederick Jackson Turner to consider the impact of the American West. Turner's Frontier Thesis argued that its very existence had done more to shape American society and character than any other factor and that its closure would create a need for American expansion in other ways.

Chap. 18 Test Evaluation
Lesson Outline
We reviewed and scored Bella's Chap. 18 take-home test and she did a wonderful job, scoring 90% - an A-! Areas for improvement involve essay writing. Bella is not very comfortable writing in the 3rd person. We discussed that writing answers or essays for history and other social science classes requires thought, analysis, formulation of a good thesis and incorporation of examples and facts to support the thesis. A solid conclusion should follow. Bella is totally capable of this. We will continue to work on Bella's expository writing skills throughout the course.
