Lesson Comments
Lesson moved & modified from Wed., 1/19. However, Bella did not attend first period American History class again today. Bella has attended about 30 minutes of U.S. History this week. We are in the midst of a very vital and complex period in American History: the Civil War. There has been no consistency or quality learning time. Both Bella and Sam are already very behind in American History. Sam responded to an email I sent to him via school email and he asked me to "just send him the work." I responded to him that he has to read the Chap. on the Civil War and take the test, but we need to meet to have class, review and discuss and learn together. Any directives regarding how we are handling their hours in American History would be very useful to our course planning and learning time. Thank you, Judie!

Miami Trip
Lesson Outline
Today we went to Miami with the Spanish students to practice the language in the real world. On this pleasant trip, the students had the opportunity to practice Spanish at different times such as: On the train, in the restaurant, in an art gallery, and even in the Uber. It was an experience in which they had connect with Spanish-speaking people and with Cuban and Latin American culture. We could evaluate, correct, and encourage them with the Spanish language.

Lesson Comments
Absent for 1st period. Concerned about Bella's progress as I noted her American History book in her room when I arrived this AM. This means she did not do the reading HW or study for the test on Friday. We discussed that the Civil War is an intense period in US History. I will talk with her more about this once she arrives for first period. Found out at 9:31AM that Bella's Grandpa has tragically passed away. I reached out to Bella & Sam via email and sent them my sincerest condolences. Bella did arrive at the beginning of 2nd period. We were able to speak briefly. She said she would take her history book home and study for the test on Friday. As of now, they are not sure if they are traveling to NY. I expressed my deepest condolences and let Bella know hat I'm here if she needs anything.

Early Years of the Civil War
Lesson Outline
Following the fall of Fort Sumter on April 13, 1861, the guns fell silent for a while. But there was still plenty of action. The first battle of Civil War at Bull Run, VA, just outside of D.C. shocked Americans. Many spectators packed picnic lunches to go and watch as it was unfathomable that Americans would go to battle against each other. People were shocked when Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson's troops advanced so aggressively towards Union soldiers that the crowds and many Union troops dispersed! 5,000 soldiers does in the First Battle of Bull Run. Lincoln appointed Gen. George McClellan to lead the Union Army in the East, called the Army of the Potomac. Lincoln ordered a naval blockade of the south which reduced southern trade by 2/3. Both sides built ironclad warships. The battle between Southern warship the Merrimack & Northern warship the Monitor marked a new age in naval warfare. The Union was determined to split the Confederacy by gaining control of the MS & TN Rivers. Union operations in the West were led by Gen Ulysses S. Grant whose victories helped secure the lower TN River, drove the South out of border state KY, and enabled Union troops to advance on TN, AL & MS. The Battle of Shiloh in MS, April 6, 1862 lasted 2 days. The Union won, but there were over 20,000 casualties. After Shiloh, Union forces gained footholds in MS, TN and was on it's way to controlling the MS River. On April 25, 1862 Union naval forces under David Farragut captured New Orleans. LA. The North now controlled the MS River delta. In the North, Union Gen. McClellan led the Peninsular Campaign with a goal to capture Richmond. Lincoln kept urging McClellan to attack as his delays were allowing the Confederates to build defenses & the North did not take Richmond. The Confederates won Second Battle of Bull Run on Aug. 29, 1862. Both sides clashed again at the Battle of Antietam, MD on Sept. 17, 1862. There were close to 6,000 casualties, 17,000 wounded and Gen. Lee made a quick retreat. Lincoln was furious with Gen. McClellan. Lincoln placed Gen. Ambrose Burnside in command. Antietam changed Northern war aims. Pres. Lincoln used the battle to take action against slavery.

Lesson Comments
Bella was 15 minutes late for first period. She shared with me that her 92-year old grandpa is likely dying from Covid. They found out last night. She said Sam was very upset and crying. They are expecting their Grandpa to pass soon and don't know if they will go to NY or not. They literally had to "say their goodbyes" to their Grandpa over the phone last night.
