The Economy & People of the North: 1800-1850
Lesson Outline
By the early 1800s, the regions of the U.S. North & South were growing further apart. We reviewed: what kind of technology & industrial changes took place in the northern states, by 1860 Northeastern factories produced at least 2/3 of the country's manufactured goods. Transportation improves in the North between 1800-1850 with the building of canals, bridges and the invention of the steamship. Communication improves when Samuel Morse invents the telegraph in 1844. John Deere and Cyrus McCormick invent new tools to improve agriculture & farming methods. But in the cities, working conditions in factories were deplorable. We discussed life for African Americans and women in the North.
The largest group of immigrants to the U.S. between 1846-1860 were Irish and the 2nd largest group of immigrants at this time were German. We concluded with the rise of "Nativists" and their "Know-Nothing" party.
