We discussed elements and compounds. We learned the law of definite proportions and the law of multiple proportions. We practiced calculating the percent by mass of an element in a compound. We started chapter 4 by talking about early ideas about matter by Democritus and Aristotle.
Bella read and discussed chapter 16 Escape from Camp 14. She analyzed and discussed the permeability of the border between North and South Korea and the effect on the number of defectors. She wrote a journal entry on the topic of freedom and the effect of freedom on one's life and relationships. She then reviewed SAT vocabulary being studied and took a quiz.
This was my first class with Isabella. She advised me as to her current place in the text. We proceeded to do problems with variables on both sides of the equations including the properties of distribution, proportions, and fractions. There was no assignment.

Izabella is well versed in basic algebra and mental math. She's a very able student.
After reading and discussing chapter 18 of Escape from Camp 14, Bella discussed how the protagonist, Shin Dong-Hyuk, represents the durability of the human spirit and its
ability to survive the harshest conditions. Bella then reviewed and applied the SAT vocabulary presently being studied.
Bella guided us through our daily review. She was concise and precise.
She then started work on her 55 essential verb project. She created many of the notecards needed for the project.
We then went outside and practiced present regular -ar & -er conjugations while hitting the ping-pong ball.
After the vocal warm-up and technique exercises I put Bella through a quick "Preliminary Level" test from the Royal Conservatoire syllabus. She did well on most voice and aural tests. We then worked some more on "Summer Nights" from Grease, and she began learning "I Have a Dream".
This class was an introduction to Chap. 4, "The Colonies Grow:" 1607 - 1770. By the 1700s, there were 250,000 people living in the colonies and this number grew to 2.5 million by the mid 1770s. There were about 690,000 Europeans, 278,000 Africans and 2,500 Jewish immigrants living in the colonies by 1775. A quick overview (details will be in HW reading) was presented on lifestyles in New England, the Middle & Southern colonies. Bella will also read about triangular trade, the transport of slaves and the Middle Passage. We will discuss more about the Middle Passage and life for African Americans in colonial America on Wednesday.
Bella was given six minutes to study for her quiz today, after she learned how to ask for time to study in Spanish.
We reviewed the quiz. Bella made some additional notecards.
She then took her quiz. She got a good grade on the quiz, but may consider upping her study time each day.
Bella was then introduced to one of the supplemental books for the year: 501 Spanish Verbs. She will make a list from that book to help her study for her 55 verb test.
