State Sovereignty: Definition & Challenges
Lesson Outline
State sovereignty is the power that states have to make their own laws and to be free from federal interference in some respects. It is the result of federalism, or when a system has two levels of government. This type of dual government is largely tied to the 10th Amendment. The 10th Amendment states, ''The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.'' One way that federalism has impacted people's lives is through the police powers, or the power that states have to create and enforce laws relating to the safety, health, and welfare of the public.

Lesson Comments
Bella is not always visible during her remote lessons. She is actually using her phone and not her lap-top. She has said her lap-top doesn't work. She uses her cell phone which is not conducive to learning. I can't see Bella and she hasn't been able to see me for the last two days. After sharing this with Dr. Pat this AM, he said we could send a lap-top from school for Bella to use. I gently brought this subject up with Bella today, explaining that she needs a better device for remote learning. She said she doesn't need a lap-top from school - that her lap-top actually does work, it just isn't charged and she prefers her phone. Later in the lesson, Bella asked me to check if it was an Orange Week for break from 11:45 - 12:00pm. I confirmed that it is and Bella felt that she should be able to take this break from home to go to out for lunch. I encouraged her to stay with me, but she resisted and said, "No, Bari. Just because I'm home, I stay on top of these things." (meaning break time). I adore Bella, but I am concerned about some unhealthy, non-productive habits that are escalating - during her junior year of high school. Any suggestions for how we may collaborate and help Bella? Thank you in advance! Bari

what is Political Change?
Lesson Outline
While the word political change is a general term that can apply to any change in the political landscape, it is most often reserved for significant disruptions in a government that leads to new or modified leadership or policies. Political change happens when there is a disconnect between the ideals and values of citizens and the values and ideals of the current government. Some of the ways in which political change can occur include social movements, civil wars, coup d'etats, and revolutions.

Also, remember that a coup d'etat is sudden, but may lead to a more long and drawn out types of political change. On the other hand, political change, such as social movements, civil wars, and revolutions, tend to be more drawn out. Specifically, though, revolutions change the very structure and ideals of a political system, and are often the most intense type of political change.

Lesson Comments
Bella was not in school today but joined first session online approx 15-20 minutes late (as is the norm). Her screen is still not on, which was surprising, given our discussions last week with her dad. I was very concerned about her performance today -- her level of distractedness was extreme -- there is either something else taking up her attention (eg a device), or there is something affecting her ability to function -- this is not the same person I was interacting with for the first few months of this school year, and I am concerned about her overall health and well being. We spent two sessions today going over something that should be able to be covered in 5 minutes. I suggest we continue to follow up on this actively to be sure Bella is ok and we're able to make an informed decision (along with her) as to how best to proceed.

Bella was not in school today, which was surprising to me given our meeting with her dad last week. She did try to sign in (approx 15-20 minutes late, as she does every day -- she uses this time to walk her dogs and have breakfast), but was unable to do so due to internet problems at school.

Bella has been out one day this week with a migrane and has missed our other two days without explanation, which is surprising given our meeting with Bella's dad last week.
