Checks and balances are a crucial system in the U.S. government intended to ensure that each branch carries out its duties lawfully. Important components of the system include: Checks and balances provide for a separation of powers, meaning that while each branch of government has its own responsibilities, other branches can act to balance the power of a single branch. This system was created with the writing of the Constitution. The legislative branch writes the laws. It can check the other two branches through action such as majority votes. The executive branch enforces the law. It is headed by the president of the United States and can appoint members to the judicial branch while also checking the legislative branch through vetoes. The judicial branch consists of the Supreme Court and other federal courts. It interprets the law and can declare laws unconstitutional.
Today, Bella and I continued studying Act 1 Scene 1 of Othello. We kept working on our Iago character mind maps, citing quotes about Iago and summarizing them in our own words.
