Jimmy Carter as President: Election, Foreign Policy & Accomplishments
Lesson Outline
Jimmy Carter was the 39th president of the United States. He succeeded Gerald Ford. Carter was in office between 1977 and 1981. Prior to serving as president, he had been a peanut farmer, governor of Georgia, and member of Georgia's state senate. Carter's domestic policies were more conservative than many of the Democrats who came before him. Despite this, he proposed rather progressive energy and economic policy in order to combat the energy crisis. Congress didn't support many of President Carter's plans. Carter's main foreign policy success was the Camp David Accords, which established a lasting peace between Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachem Begin of Israel. Carter lost the 1980 presidential election to Ronald Reagan largely due to his failed domestic policies. (The Iran hostage crisis played a role, as well.) After he left the presidency, he embarked on a long and distinguished career as a humanitarian.
Bella and I spoke at length about the material that might be on her final exam. She was given a thorough list of possible material that included sections dealing with reading, writing, speaking, listening. Bella was given specific examples of questions that may appear such as discussing key concepts of Spanish 3 (subjunctive, conditional, future, etc.), culturally relevant events (dirty war, calle ocho, etc.), specific lists of vocabulary, and songs that use the Spanish subjunctive.
Bella reviewed, discussed, and analyzed chapters read last week in Where the Crawdads Sing. She wrote on the topic of hopes and dreams as seen through the lens of the protagonist. She then reviewed SAT vocabulary previously studied. Bella then began reading the next chapter assigned for homework.
We began to look at the Watergate Crisis today. During Nixon's 2nd term, what seemed like a small scandal turned into a presidential crisis. The scandal began with the president's reelection campaign. In June, 1972, his reelection committee wanted information about about the Democrats' campaign plans. Members of the Nixon campaign ordered "plumbers" to break into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee to install telephone listening devices & bugs. This break-in would set events in motion that would rock the presidency and the nation. Uncovering the cover up is complicated and we will look at from a prospective that lays out the people, places, times ad crimes committed during this unprecedented time in presidential history.

This was a remote class. Bella explained that it's difficult for her to get to school when her father leaves for work early in the morning - which is why she isn't here today. Bella told me she is going to be out the last 3 days of school on 5/24, 5/25 and 5/26 as she will be in NY.
