Secants which intersect inside or near a circle
Lesson Outline
I explained to Jaydn how to use the formulas for angles and segment lengths when secants or tangents to circles intersect inside or outside of the circles. We then did some sample problems and I showed her some of the approaches for solving them. There was no assignment.

The Cold War Eases/Middle Eastern tensions increase in the Eighties
Lesson Outline
The Cold War was a prolonged period of tension between the US and the USSR. It lasted between the end of World War II and the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's reform programs of 'glasnost' and 'perestroika' played a crucial role in changing the USSR and creating conditions for revolution throughout Eastern Europe. Revolution against the USSR began in Poland and eventually spread throughout Eastern Europe. These revolutions resulted in the overthrow of communist rule and the establishment of democratic governments, which ultimately led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.
During the 1980s, democratic leaders grew increasingly concerned about the Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein. Just as the Cold War thaws, Saddam Hussein's actions in the Middle East will lead to new international conflict and the 1990s will begin with a new war: The Gulf War, also known as 'Operation Desert Storm' or the 'Persian Gulf War."

Formulas for angles and segment lengths with circles
Lesson Outline
I introduced Jaydn to the calculations of angles and segment lengths where secant lines intersected either inside, outside, or on the circle. Since each case is different for both angles and segment lengths, there are a number of formulas generated. We began with the case where secant lines intersect inside circles and calculated missing angles. There was no assignment.

The End of the Vietnam War
Lesson Outline
President Richard Nixon entered office in 1969 promising to end the Vietnam War. His first goal was to ease relations between the US, the USSR and China in order to dissuade the nations from supporting its communist ally North Vietnam. A new period known as Détente, or a cooling of international relations. But war continued to rage on, the American public called for a withdrawal of military forces and an end to the conflict. Nixon's policy of "Vietnamization" allowed the US to turn the war effort over to the South Vietnamese, but the US continued its military and economic aid. Nixon engaged in unsuccessful secret wars in Cambodia and in Laos. Finally, on January 27, 1973, the United States, North Vietnam and South Vietnam signed the Paris Peace Accords. This officially marked the end of the war for the United States in Vietnam. Unfortunately, the North Vietnamese defied the agreements and captured the South Vietnamese capital Saigon. After two decades of effort in Vietnam by the United States, the war came to a disappointing end.
