Jaydn began by reviewing SAT vocabulary being studied. We then discussed the three types of conflict: Man against Man, Man agaianst Nature, and Man against Self. She then read the next chapter of The Great Alone. She then analyzed and discussed the type of conflict each of the three main characters was experiencing. She cited text to support her analysis.
The term Red Scare refers to a period of heightened fear surrounding communism or other leftist ideologies. It is also a reference to the red flag often used to symbolize communism. In the United States, there are generally two date ranges referenced as Red Scare periods. The First Red Scare occurred between 1917-1920, and the Second Red Scare between 1947-1957. both the First and Second Red Scare occurred during periods of heightened patriotism when communist efforts abroad were seeing some success on the world stage. The First Red Scare took place from 1917-1920, and the Second Red Scare took place from 1947-1957. These time periods in the United States were characterized by the following: 1) Increased fear and paranoia about communism taking hold in America, 2) Private and government sponsored propaganda via posters, cartoons, television, and movies, 3) The rising tensions of the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Persecution of those suspected of being communist sympathizers or Communist Party members, particularly through what became known as McCarthyism. This was particularly recognized through the use of intimidation tactics and hearsay to make claims of treason.
I reviewed the essay Jaydn wrote last Thursday. She edited the first paragraph and we discussed the elements of its elaboration in the subsequent paragraphs. She will rewrite for homework and we will continue to analyze it next class. She read the next chapter of The Great Alone. We discussed the theme of the unpredictability of alcohol and traced it to the character development of Ernt and discussed its hostile effect when combined with the setting. We reviewed SAT vocabulary being studied.
I started the new topic of volume of solid figures with a short review of area formulas. I then explained how solid measurements were always given in cubic units. We then examined the formulas for the volumes of cubes, rectangular solids, triangular prisms, and cylinders. I also showed her the approach to finding the volume of a complex solid made of two or more other solid figures together. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Jaydn was a little less focused today, at one point forgetting what page we were on. It makes it difficult to lecture to a class when the only is not paying attention.
I worked some practice problems with Jaydn calculating lateral and surface areas for triangular prisms, rectangular solids, and cylinders. I showed her how the lateral areas of triangular prisms can be found using the areas of the rectangles that make up their sides. By analyzing the pairs of matching faces in rectangular solids, we were able to find the surface areas. I also pointed out that the lateral area of a cylinder can be found by multiplying the circumference by the height. There was no assignment.

I was impressed with Jaydn's efforts during the session. She also volunteered answers to questions I asked her.
Today we focused on the reasons for President Biden's visit to Europe and why his meetings with NATO and European Union countries over these next few days are so vital and could determine the direction of world history. For the first time in at least 30 years, a US president has arrived in an unstable Europe. For just over 4 weeks, Europe has been rattled by Russian aggression. The U.S. and its allies are mourning a shattered era of perpetual peace. We will continue to follow President Biden's visit to address NATO and European Union leaders in Brussels and his travel to Poland.
Jaydn learned about Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson, her background and why the President has nominated her to sit on the court. Jaydn learned that the nomination of and approval process for a new Supreme Court justice is part of the U.S. Constitutional process of checks and balances. We viewed several minutes of yesterday's Q & A session between Judge Brown Jackson and members of the Senate.
