How Did the Cold War Begin?
Lesson Outline
The Cold War was a period of time between the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Soviet Union in which the United States and the Soviet Union rivaled each other as world powers. The exact date range is vague, but from about 1945-1991 is speculated as most accurate. Why was the Cold War called the Cold War? Though there was never any direct military action taken between the two nations, conflict arose abroad in smaller regions where political disagreements and armed coalitions formed as a result of the tension. The longstanding rivalry took place through the use of political and military propaganda, as well as direct political campaigns targeting the other nation as to not be fully trusted. The Cold War influenced the ways of life in the two nations directly, including the nuclear arms race, the race to launch a human into space, and political proxy wars such as the Vietnam War, where America became heavily involved. This lesson will explain how the Cold War began, Cold War events through the decades, and the lasting impact of the Cold War between the two nations.

How Do Mail-In Ballots Work?
Lesson Outline
Today there is a local election for Jupiter residents to vote for a new mayor and two new members of the Town Council. I will be going to vote in person later, so I brought my mail-in ballot to class to show Jaydn. Although it could be dropped off during business hours at the N. County Courthouse today, it's now too late to mail it in from any other location. So we used the ballot for Jaydn to gain an understanding of the vote-in ballot process.
We reviewed instructions for: How to mark a ballot, how to insert it in the envelope, where to sign, seal and date the outside of the envelope and how to return it to the Palm Beach Supervisor of Elections. Jaydn learned that it is even possible for voters to track their ballots at www.votepalmbeach.gov. I have tracked a previous ballot and it was very interesting to see it make its way through the process. Jaydn was impressed by how sensible and easy it is for a voter/constituent to check on the status of their vote.

Jaydn was presented with a quote from the novel being studied. She had to take a stance on the topic and write to support her point of view using text to support her elaboration. She then read the next chapter of The Great Alone. She compared the theme of isolation and its effect on a human being as it appears in The Great Alone and the novel Where the Crawdads Sing.

Post-War American Life: Culture of the late 1940s & 1950s
Lesson Outline
Soon after WWII, there was a lot of international cold-war related anxiety that both characterized the early postwar era. Social conservatism and prosperity were also trademarks of the late 1940s and 1950s. With World War II behind them, many couples decided to have children. The baby-boom was a trend lasting roughly between 1946-1964 during which there was a very high ratio of babies born. During this time, suburbs became an attractive place to live for many young families. One of the most famous suburbs was Levittown, New York. Gender roles were typically traditional during this time. Many women stayed at home, tending to their children and engaging in other domestic tasks, while men were understood to be 'the breadwinner.' We discussed the Red Scare again. Jaydn was reminded that is was a period of heightened fear of communism, lasted roughly between 1947-1953. Republican senator Joseph McCarthy became famous for making unfounded allegations of communist activity. Anti-communism was a defining characteristic of the postwar era. During this period Rock and roll music was born. One of the leaders of this bold, rebellious new genre was Elvis Presley. A youth culture developed also, with many teenagers engaging in hobbies like hot-rodding. Comic-book reading, hula-hooping, wearing blue jeans, and eating fast food were other activities commonly associated with the postwar era.
