Lesson Comments
Jaydn was much more focused and attentive during this lesson. She still tries to avoid answering problems definitively. I try to gently force her into providing concrete answers when she should know them. She has made some progress in that area.

Who are the Uyghurs & the US diplomatic Boycott of 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing
Lesson Outline
The Biden administration will not send an official US delegation to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing as a statement against China's ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, in western China. US athletes will still be allowed to compete in the Olympics, but the administration will not be sending government officials to the games. The same policy applies for the Paralympic Games, which are also taking place in Beijing.
The White House is looking to send a clear message that the human rights abuses in China mean there cannot be business as usual between the U.S. & China. The move marks an escalation of pressure by the US on China over allegations of forced labor and human rights abuses in China's western region of Xinjiang, against the Uyghur population and other ethnic and religious minority groups. We looked at a very brief news story on the camps where China imprisons, abuses and tortures Uyghur people because they are a minority population who practice Islam with their own, unique, vibrant culture. Jaydn expressed that she would like the U.S. to do more to help the Uyghurs, but acknowledged that the U.S. has to be diplomatic in its protest because China, like the U.S. is a nuclear power.

The Russian Revolution
Lesson Outline
In the 1800s, the end of serfdom marked the beginning of even more struggles for the Russian people. They went from being forced to rent farmland, to being completely landless. This pushed people into the cities and left many jobless. The Russian Revolution occurred in phases, beginning with the revolution of 1905, the people wanted moderate guarantees and concessions that would limit the tsar's power and make life easier for the citizens. The Romanov Dynasty had always been unwilling to give up power and Nicholas II eventually seized control back from Duma, the Russian parliament. With the outbreak of WWI, Nicholas II hoped for the opportunity to raise his approval rating but the country was not ready for war. Amongst supply and food shortages, people began to protest again and Nicholas II finally agreed to abdicate. A moderate government was established and was still committed to the war, but Communists like Vladimir Lenin did not think the government went far enough. Another phase of revolution happened in November 1917 called the Bolshevik Revolution. This is when the first Communist government was established. After a Civil War, the Soviet Union fully rejected Capitalism and Lenin became the effective dictator of Russia.
