Will first set up folders in his email and on his computer so that he can organize his files. For the rest of the class, we watched and discussed a TEDx presentation on hacking and the creative mind. We talked about networks and how they work to connect not just computers but also peripherals (e.g., printers), TVs, and even some high-tech refrigerators.

Intro to IT: Hacking and security

Will had expressed an interest in computer hacking, so we listened to a podcast that explained the role of "White Hat Hackers" (the good guys) and what it takes to become one. Then, to gauge how well he picked up on his computer's settings and use of privacy, I asked him to perform a few tasks, including initiating a private browsing session. He then asked about avoiding viruses and other malware, so we downloaded a virus protection program that he can use to check his computer occasionally.

Lesson Outline
Will continued to navigate through the settings on his new computer. I showed him how to open a "private browsing window" in Safari so that he can browse the internet without storing local data (an added level of privacy and protection). Will also went through some of his system preferences and set up different looks and actions to suit his personal tastes.

After Will put final touches on his Scratch project and viewed other students' projects, he did some research on the history of animation. He looked up Steamboat Willie and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. We talked about how they were made all by hand and without the aid of computers.
