Will watched a couple of videos about how computers work. We talked about the computer's CPU (brain), memory, programs that make it run, etc. We also watched a TED Talk video on how the original Star Wars light saber was made.

Will first set up folders in his email and on his computer so that he can organize his files. For the rest of the class, we watched and discussed a TEDx presentation on hacking and the creative mind. We talked about networks and how they work to connect not just computers but also peripherals (e.g., printers), TVs, and even some high-tech refrigerators.

Will finished researching and answering questions about email. He learned about how email is sent and what spam is.

Following instructions and links in an email from me, Will is researching information about how to effectively use email and some of the history and technology behind it.

Will had expressed an interest in computer hacking, so we listened to a podcast that explained the role of "White Hat Hackers" (the good guys) and what it takes to become one. Then, to gauge how well he picked up on his computer's settings and use of privacy, I asked him to perform a few tasks, including initiating a private browsing session. He then asked about avoiding viruses and other malware, so we downloaded a virus protection program that he can use to check his computer occasionally.

Will continued to navigate through the settings on his new computer. I showed him how to open a "private browsing window" in Safari so that he can browse the internet without storing local data (an added level of privacy and protection). Will also went through some of his system preferences and set up different looks and actions to suit his personal tastes.

Will reset his Apple user id password as well as created a secure passcode. He also went through Safari and the computer's security settings and made changes to ensure his computer and data are as secure as possible.

I walked Will through setting up his email on his new computer. I also showed him the Mac-equivalent Word application (Pages), and explained what is required to put MS Office on his new computer.

After Will put final touches on his Scratch project and viewed other students' projects, he did some research on the history of animation. He looked up Steamboat Willie and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. We talked about how they were made all by hand and without the aid of computers.

Will completed his Scratch animation. He refined the timing on the sequence and added one final animation.
