As Joshua has completed reading the novel, we today explored how and why Aristotle's definition of hamartia captures both the role of character and Fate in the play. In this regard, we identified the role of the witches as representing Fate and Joshua discussed how Macbeth challenges Fate by exercising free will thereby suggesting a more limited role of Fate in Macbeth's downfall. Using this discussion, we then worked on revising Joshua's short essay answer on last week's test in order to clarify his argument about the relationship between Fate and free will in the play. We also noted how Shakespeare builds tension by adding a few almost irrelevant short scenes before we see McDuff exact vengeance on Macbeth.
Work through a few lab preparations of some common esters which produce scents of pineapple, apples, and pears. Introduce the chapter on chemical reactions. Define what must occur to the atoms in a compound in order for a chemical reaction to happen. List 7 ways in which a chemical reaction can be determined, and discuss each one. Prepare for a lab exercise tomorrow to demonstrate each of the ways a reaction can be determined to have occured.
Today we spent the class reviewing the homework assigned last night. Joshua had difficulty with it. Conceptually he understood most of what was asked, but he made several calculation mistakes. I asked if he felt pressure for time, or had outside distractors? He couldn't determine anything. I think I have been doing most of the direct instruction instead of having him lead the problems. Next class I will have him work through most of the problems rather than have him watch me. He needs to practice more himself.
Completed the slide presentation on Unterschiede zwischen US und Deutschland. Joshua read a snipped of an article in German about how Abendbrot began in Germany in the 1920s through the industrialisation of the cities and opening of factories with cafeterias for the hardworking men.
Today Joshua and I reviewed the problems in AP Classroom that I had assigned to him for Friday and over the weekend. He had difficulty with about 40% of the problems. We spent the class time reviewing each of them together. Some of the problems he made simple mistakes with, others he had misconceptions about. I took note of those problems and we will use the class time tomorrow to review the content.
Google slides of differences and similarities between the US/Canada and Germany - cultural, food, customs, recycling, taking kitchen with them when they move, warm large meal middle of the day stemming back to the 1920s with the industrialization of cities in Germany.
Conversation in German about the holiday and past weekend.
