Introduce chemical reaction rates. Discuss how to determine the average rate as the change of quantity over time. Introduce the formula change of quantity/change of time. Discuss the changes in terms of moles/liter seconds. Introduce initial and final concentration symbols and time symbols. Present an example to solve in class and one to solve at home.
Today's session was an introduction to our next novel, Henry James' Daisy Miller. As the opening pages allude to the characters' visit to the famed Castle of Chillon , we are beginning our study of the novel by first examining Lord Byron's narrative poem,"The Prisoner of Chillon" to enable us to later analyze the relevance of this allusion to the theme of the novel. I provided some biographical information about the author ,Henry James, as well as biographical information about the poet,Lord Byron. Critically, I further discussed the characteristics of the Byronic hero as an archetype derived from Milton's "Paradise Lost" which we studied in part last year.
Today Joshua and I discussed the graphs of sinusoidal functions, their period, frequency, amplitude, midline and phase shift. We first started by discussing the square root function and what we know about the transformations. Then we applied that to the sine function. Joshua was able to see how students could make mistakes when they see 3x-3 as a shift to the right 3. However, if you consider that 3x-3 is really 3(x-1), then you see that it's a shift to the right 1 (not 3). Joshua then practiced graphing sinusoidal functions given the equations. He also got practice writing the equations functions given it characteristics.
Joshua and I continued with Sinusoidal functions today. We worked on transformations in the order HRSV (horizontal, reflections, stretch/shrink, vertical). We practiced considering how the amplitude, period, frequency, and midline would be affected. These problems are quite challenging but Joshua is doing great.
