Today we found source images to draw. Jack drew modern tanks and tanks from the 50's. I showed him how drawings can be scanned and turned into a vector format for use in coding projects.

Coding defined - the inventor
Lesson Outline
I offered Jack a simple explanation of Coding and defined it as writing instructions for computers and other hardware. I asked Jack to try to explain computer language to me as it clearly is different from human language, and to explain in his own words how one can instruct a computer to read instructions (called “programs”) and do what you have asked it to do. We then read about Charles Babbage an English mathematician and inventor who is credited with having conceived the first automatic digital computer in the mid-19th century. He developed a device called the analytical engine, and worked on it for nearly 40 years. I used this as an example to show how hard work with a purpose and drive can result in many cool ground-breaking inventions and successes in life. Jack and I then researched the person who made the app, Minecraft, and Jack knew the name of the creator. We read about his early childhood and noted many parallels to Jack's interests.

Lesson Comments
I subbed for Christine today, Wednesday 1-31-24, from 9:47-10:32. The work for him was listed as Jack's choice, but he was into using his new ear buds so he was prompted to listen.

Familiarity with coding processes
Lesson Outline
Jack and I went through the step-by-step, start-to-finish process involved in printing out a return label using available technology here at the school. Jack is a fast learner who absorbs information readily and is capable of both visually and auditorily synthesizing information to achieve successful outcomes on computer-related tasks. He demonstrated a good ability to execute the necessary steps to achieve his objective of printing out the label for an item for which he had received prior parental approval to purchase.

Lesson Comments
Jack has been very distracted lately. He tried to call his mom several times during our session. I told him he needed to call her during a break and not during class moving forward. He's not very interested in coding and is very distracted by his own apps and electronics. He's so sweet though:)
