We worked so effectively today that Rachel said her assignment is complete and she doesn't need to come in after school tomorrow. She was very pleased.
Rachel is about to begin a unit on WWII. We worked on a series of HW questions about battles, places, campaigns and events in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during WWII. As usual, Rachel did a wonderful job (especially because she wasn't feeling well today). Rachel said she felt confident during the history test we prepped for last week. Get well soon and keep up the great work, Rachel!

Remote tutorial session from 3:30 - 4:30 PM today.
Rachel is being so responsible and proactive, completing her study guide in our session today for a history test this Thursday. She will show it to her history teacher tomorrow to see if there is anything else she needs to add to it. Rachel was pleased to let me know she received a 95% grade on a history assignment we worked on a week or two ago. She said her history teacher is glad we are working together and this seems to really be helping Rachel. Great feedback for us and the hard work Rachel is doing outside of class! Rachel is free to contact/consult with me if she needs anything else before her test on Thursday.
We worked from 3:30 - 4:30 pm on history HW questions re: revolutions and nationalism around the globe in the aftermath of WWI. The questions focused primarily on the rise of independence movements in China and India in the early part of the 20th century. It was so nice to see Rachel in person today!
Rachel needed assistance with HW questions on the Russian Revolution. We completed the assignment in our session today.

Remote session. Rachel's mom texted school just before 9am to inquire if I could work with Rachel at 3:30pm today. I had to make a slight change to my schedule today - but always glad to make time for Rachel.
Today we continued this history assignment that we began last week while Rachel was in Kauai on spring break. She is tasked with writing a 3-page essay on what she observes is the greatest lesson to learn from WWI. Rachel has wisely chosen to write about the weaknesses of the Versailles Treaty. It was a treaty based on punishment and not peace and it tragically leads to WWII. Since our last lesson, Rachel worked on finding quotes from the sources provided by her teacher to use in the essay. She found some great quotes for the beginning of the paper and she still needs to look for more of them. Rachel shared that her teacher liked the outline we comprised for the paper last week. Rachel was pleased with the introductory paragraph we worked on today. This has the potential to be a very strong essay. Rachel is short on time as the essay is due tomorrow and she has a lacrosse game this evening. Tonight, Rachel needs to look for additional primary source quotes and complete writing the essay. It's always a pleasure to work with Rachel.

This has the potential to be a very strong essay. Rachel is short on time as the essay is due tomorrow and she has a lacrosse game this evening. I wish they had reached out to me earlier this week to continue to work on the assignment. Rachel has had several lacrosse games this week, so it may have been a challenge to find time.
Today we continued to work on Rachel's WWI essay re: her choice of the most influential event from WWI. She has insightfully chosen to write about the weaknesses of the Versailles Treaty. We spent the lesson evaluating a good number of resources provided by Rachel's teacher from the Benjamin School library. Rachel must cite from at least three of these sources. We read, discussed and evaluated these sources and Rachel chose 9 quotes that she would like to incorporate into this research paper as it continues to take shape.

This was a remote lesson...but from here in FL, not Kauai. Rachel's mom will contact Judie directly about arranging our next session in person at school. Rachel thinks Wed. afternoon may be the most optimal for her between school and a lacrosse game.
Complete English Essay/Begin Research Essay on WWI
Lesson Outline
Today we began by working on the conclusion for Rachel's English essay on Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest." Her re-write is now complete and Rachel has done a really solid job analyzing and writing about a very complex, 125 year old English, satirical play. We then spent our time working on a historical research paper for history class. Rachel is tasked with identifying what she believes to be the most influential thing to learn from WWI. After we discussed a few options, Rachel's choice of topic is to write about the Versailles Treaty of 1919.We worked on an outline for this essay: formulated a brief thesis statement, and ideas for the body of the paper. Between now an our next meeting, Rachel will peruse the three sources provided by her teacher to read for proof and quotes to support the points she will write about the weaknesses of the Versailles Treaty and how tragically, it will lead to the rise of Nazism and WWII. Rachel emphatically believes that treaties should be based on peace, not punishment! Rachel is a thoughtful, intelligent, insightful young lady. It is a pleasure to work with her!

Rachel will want to meet this week to work on her WWI research paper that is due next Fri, 3/25. Her mom will contact Judie re: our next in person meeting.
Today we met remotely while Rachel was in Kauai! Rachel wanted to do some more work on her revised "Importance of Being Earnest" essay. She has done some good work on her own. We reviewed what she has done and worked some more on the body of her essay. We will meet remotely again on Friday, March 18 at 1pm to work on the essay's conclusion and to review some history re: WWI. Great work, Rachel!
Congratulations to Rachel on earning 100% on the history assignment we worked on last week re: the causes of World War One! Our work today focused on re-structuring an essay on Oscar Wilde's play, "The Importance of Being Earnest." Rachel prepared an outline for the essay and we used it as a framework for her composition and how she will approach this opportunity to re-write her original essay. Rachel says she didn't allow for enough time on the original essay and her English teacher shared that it was too short and didn't incorporate enough quotes to support her point of view. During our session today, Rachel demonstrated solid comprehension of the themes and characters in the play. We revised the thesis and Rachel is going to focus on the themes of status, marriage and religion in the Victorian Era. Rachel said that just being able to talk about the play, themes and characters was helpful. The revised thesis will hopefully help Rachel to re-construct a more cohesive body that contains more solid examples and conclusion. Shared with Rachel that I am really impressed with her grasp of the material and the play. Her comprehension is strong. It seems she is on the right track with the work she is doing on her revised essay.
