He and I focused in a few additional skills/details which should enable him to achieve a successful score upon the next retake which is expected within the next week.

Lesson Outline
James was well focused and attentive during our Introductory session to prepare for the PERT Math Test. The current timeframe is for James to sit for this test toward late June.
Today , I began by providing instruction on identifying an inference and differentiating an inference from a direct expression. We then worked on a reading portion of a practice PERT test specifically focusing on questions that seek direct support from a passage vs. those that seek an inference. As we addressed some of the longer more complex passages, I provided strategies for gleaning the main idea or gist of a passage. We then applied those strategies to questions where Kaitlin encountered difficulty.
As Kaitlin completed the PSAT this morning, today we continued with our PERT test prep which we had started earlier this quarter. We worked on the reading section focusing on how to identify plot order, the main claim of the passage, and the purpose of the passage. We further studied vocabulary in context. I noted differences between the PSAT and the PERT as we reviewed the test material.
Today we worked on the reading section of a PERT practice test. I provided strategies and instruction based on the type of question. For example, questions that begin ,"According to the text" have answers based on the explicit words in the passage, not an inference. We practiced locating the specific phrases that answer these type of questions. We then studied finding inferences in literary passages as well as determining vocabulary( meaning ) based on the context.
