Introductions, goals, and practice. Landon read two SAT passages and answered 7/10 correctly on each one. His errors were in vocabulary and evidence-based practice. When asked for the second best answer, he answered correctly and understood his errors. He will practice the last reading passage for homework and the set of writing practice.
We reviewed Landon's class test and discussed the questions where he did not score points. We then reviewed material that would likely be in his next test, including asymptotes, composite functions and their domains, implicitly defined functions, and transformations of functions.
Further review for the test, concentrating on determining ranges of functions, deciding whether or not certain relations are functions, and finding horizontal, vertical, and skew asymptotes.
Reviewed Sections 1.1 through 1.3 in preparation for test. Resumed with Section 1.6: Transformations; vertical and horizontal translations; reflections across the x-axis, the y-axis, and the origin; Even functions and their symmetry with respect to the y-axis.
Parametrically defined functions. Plotting parametric functions. Eliminating the parameter. Inverse relations. One-to-one functions. The horizontal line test. Inverse functions. Methods for finding inverse functions algebraically and graphically.
Precalculus starts in Chapter 1 of the book (after the introductory chapter). But chapter 1 is mainly a review of more advanced concepts from algebra. Since Landon has already done algebra and has retained it, we were able to move quickly. We first discussed Landon's homework for Section 1.2. We then reviewed Sections 1.3 (The Twelve Basic Functions) and 1.4 (Building Functions from Functions). Landon was engaged and quick to understand the subject matter.
Assignment
Sections 1.3 and 1.4, every second odd-numbered problem.
In this session, Landon and I reviewed the introductory chapter of his textbook, which contains concepts from algebra. These concepts will be useful in precalculus. He worked on a number of problems from the textbook. Landon has a firm grasp on the algebra concepts already and is in a good position to start on precalculus itself.
In this activity, Landon completed the non calculator portion of the exam and a few problems in the calculator part of the test. We also looked at using the calculator to determine the zeros.
In this activity, Landon completed an on line practice exam, calculators can be used. This was a difficult test focusing on the more difficult problems encountered on the exam.
This was my final session with Landon. He wanted to review answers he missed on the practice test. We discussed relaxation strategies such as box breathing and positive affirmations. Landon wants to get a perfect score on the PSAT, and I told him to just focus on each question and do the best he could, that he would still do well if he mussed one or two questions. If Landon remembers to slow down as he reads and study each question, he will do well on the test.

Landon will continue to complete practice tests
