Andrew has a breadth assignment due today. I allowed him to add final details on it during the first half of class. For the second half of class, we went over what his first critique will entail.
Andrew spent class working on his Self Portrait. He spent most of class working on adding more shading to the right hand side of the portrait and then we did the proportions for the left side, working on symmetry.
Andrew worked for the whole class on finishing the first half of his portrait assignment. We corrected the proportions on the jaw, eyebrows and side of the nose so that it better resembled him. Afterwards, we worked on adding more graphite to the page and filling in any white spots that are left besides the whitest highlights. We focused for a while on laying down shadows and using the kneaded eraser to lighten them slightly vs. never going dark enough for fear that it won't be reversible.

Andrew has his first breadth assignment since his absences due at the end of the week. Due September 16th. He's on track to finish that. He has three pages to do in his sketchbook that I told him to hold off on because they are not part of the portfolio that will be submitted to CollegeBoard.
Andrew focused today in both classes on completing his Self Portrait Breadth assignment. We worked on completing the entire half of the face so he could move on to the other half. He's doing a split portrait so one side is different than the other. He has one side of the face completed and worked on the hair on that side. He sketched out and began the second half for his second half of class.
Today, we started off class working on his Self Portrait that he started yesterday. He finished a quarter of the face and worked on the nose and mouth of the portrait as well as marking out the hair. We focused today on fully rendering the skin and its textures. It's common to just draw the shadows of an object which leaves a more "sketched" feel. For this project, very little on a portrait should be left completely white.
Andrew started off with his fifteen minute sketches. I gave him reference studies for some value practice before he starts his assignment. We chose a reference image for his next breadth assignment and finished getting caught up on his missing work. His next breadth assignment is called Self Portrait in Arbitrary colors. He is supposed to create a self portrait using colors that focus more on emotion, mood, and feelings rather than realism/how they appear in real life. This assignment is going to double as an assignment for his concentration. He is doing one half in color and the other rendered in graphite. We are mostly focusing on proportion and creativity with color choices. This is due by September 16th and will be followed by his first group critique on the 19th.
Today, Andrew finished some of his makeup work. We worked on a portrait that he started at home and worked on adding a larger contrast in value. We practiced making a more visible highlight using a new kneaded eraser.
