This afternoon, Noelle and I reviewed her homework on subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping. She struggled with the homework but felt confident after we completed practice problems together. Then, we began working on the unit review which included questions from each of our lessons. She was asked to complete the review and continue practicing adding and subtracting fractions to retain her progress until she returns in February.

Noelle and I reviewed her homework on subtracting fractions and mixed numbers from whole numbers. Then, we worked on subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping. Noelle wrote the fractions with common denominators, regrouped from the whole number, added the mixed number and the fractions, subtracted the whole number and fractions, and simplified. We finished with fraction-related word problems, using estimation to solve problems. This completes the adding and subtracting fractions unit and Noelle was assigned problems from the unit review for homework.

After a quick refresher on finding common denominators, simplifying, and interchanging improper fractions and mixed numbers, we expanded on our recent lessons to include adding mixed numbers. Noelle added the whole numbers and the fractions separately. Then, she made equivalent fractions by finding common denominators, added the fractions, changed improper fractions to mixed numbers, added the mixed number to the whole number, and lastly simplified. Noelle was assigned similar problems for her to complete at home.

Then, we expanded on adding fractions with unlike denominators to adding fractions using the least common denominator. Noelle wrote the multiples of each denominator until she found a common multiple. Then, she made equivalent fractions with common denominators before adding and simplifying when necessary. She was assigned similar problems to complete for homework that we will review on Monday.

Then, we focused on finding the least common multiple of two denominators to rewrite fractions with common denominators before adding. When necessary, Noelle changed improper fractions to mixed numbers before simplifying. She was assigned similar problems for homework that we will review on Thursday.
