In that regard, we discussed chapter 3 's plot details and directed attention to passages where Atticus misinterpreted the text. Thematically, we explored the absence of individuality in the dystopian society .We then continued our essay writing exercise. Atticus worked on the drawing the design out that he had chosen for his Sugar Skull. He chose to add a few elements from his favorite anime and also added some traditional Mexican patterns.
Today, we started class by choosing the colors Atticus wanted to use on his Sugar Skull design. We then began to paint the design he had drawn on last class, starting with the larger blocks of color.
Today we continued working in Unit 1 Lesson 1 in our workbook. We were introduced to the cell theory. We read two paragraphs that discuss how the observations of several scientists were combined to form the cell theory. We watched the animation, "The Cell Theory." We filled in a table on the three principles of the cell theory.
Atticus and I completed his 'Review What You Know' homework together. He needed help on how to write fractions as decimals but completed the dividing decimals, writing ordered pairs on a graph, and plotting points on a coordinate plane independently. Then, we reviewed missed questions on dividing mixed numbers which were also assigned as homework for continued practice. Our lesson introduced the concept of rational numbers and how they can be whole numbers, fractions, or decimals. We will expand on this tomorrow, representing rational numbers on the number line.
After recalling his prediction from the last session, Atticus picked up the story when Melody’s mother entered her classroom. Although this prediction was correct, Atticus was concerned about how angry Melody’s mother was when she learned the reason for her meltdown. The outcome, a teacher change, was undoubtedly positive, and we are hopeful that the new teacher will approach the students more informedly. The next chapter introduced a new puppy for Melody and the pending arrival of a baby brother or sister. Atticus made some predictions about this sibling's effect on Melody’s life.
In order to assist Atticus' reading comprehension ,I have distributed a study guide as homework . The guide will focus Atticus on the novel's details. During the first part of the session, we reviewed Atticus' homework and used the study guide to redirect and focus Atticus to the text. After we made any necessary modifications, we continued to work on revising the test essay from last week. Atticus drafted additional portions of his introduction and began a second paragraph.
Today, we read a scientific text (Robert Hook's observations about the texture of cork) to obtain and evaluate information about the discovery of cells. We discussed the main idea of the text, the relationship between technology and science, and we underlined words and phrases in which the scientist describes the cells of cork.
