Today's lesson began the unit on using positive rational numbers. First, we discussed how the application of math can be used by engineers to problem solve and in the different fields engineers work. Then, Atticus answered questions on place-value, estimation, and operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions to prepare for the unit. For homework, he was assigned the unit's 'Review What You Know', which is due on Monday.

Using the study guide, today's lesson focused on forming complete sentences, connecting compound sentences with conjunctions, the use of the comma in forming compound sentences, and replacing the informal "you" in sentence construction. Atticus is a very avid learner and successfully completed the chapter 1 questions.
Today, Atticus and I completed our daily gardening log observations. We then began reading an article on pollinator.org discussing what pollinators are and why they are important. He began taking notes on the subject. We discussed that pollinators are important in creating our food, textiles, preventing soil erosion and preventing climate change. We then went back outside for the last 5 minutes of class and used the Seek app to identify the plant Moses-In-The-Cradle, which is growing outside the playground fence.

By examining the text we located the reasons Claudia wishes to leave home. Atticus astutely noticed the implication of gender roles for girls as a source of Claudia's discontent. As the novel's structure is somewhat unique , we together studied the author's conceit that the novel is Mrs Frankweiler's account to her lawyer as to why she is amending her will. I explained the function of a will as well as the author's use of parenthesis to denote commentary to her attorney. Last, we studied chapter vocabulary words.
Atticus was able to complete the 6th-grade placement assessment this morning. He exhibited a great deal of retention from the prior year and is ready to begin the course tomorrow with unit 1 on using positive rational numbers. Specifically, Atticus will work on fluently adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals and fractions.
