Textual analysis short story
Lesson Outline
Atticus read the short story "Charles" for homework.Today's lesson focused on identifying theme and character and locating textual support. We first discussed the surprise twist at the end of the story and located hints throughout the text as to the ending. Next, we discussed the author' s message or theme -rationalizing the source of problems to avoid responsibility . Atticus then completed an analytical exercise that required him to identify character traits and themes and then to identify textual support for his responses. He did very well!

This morning, we began the next unit on understanding and using ratios and rates. Atticus completed the unit ‘Review What You Know’ on understanding fraction-related vocabulary, finding equivalent fractions, writing equations that represent patterns in tables, and choosing the best unit of measure. Then, we discussed ratios, how they can be expressed, and how ratios can compare quantities before Atticus spent time online writing ratios to compare parts to parts and parts to wholes. Questions from the unit 1 - 4 cumulative review were assigned for homework.

Atticus and I began with a review of last night’s homework on using tables, graphs, and equations to show the relationships between dependent and independent variables. He felt better with this concept and felt prepared to take the unit test which we have been reviewing for. Questions pertained to understanding equations, applying properties of equality, writing and solving equations with all operations, understanding, writing, and solving inequalities, understanding dependent and independent variables, using patterns to write and solve equations, and relating tables, graphs, and equations. Atticus was able to correct missed questions for half credit and scored 82%.

Atticus and I continued to work on our current lesson. He struggles with relating equations from given scenarios to data in tables and coordinate grids. We completed problems on writing equations to model given situations, determining the rule, identifying the independent and dependent variables, using the rule from the equations to create a table of values, and using the ordered pairs generated in the table to graph points on a coordinate grid. Atticus gains confidence and is getting close to understanding the concept but has not yet worked independently on these problems and we will continue this lesson tomorrow.

Lesson Comments
I had to speak Atticus because for the third day he was having a difficult time staying on task. I asked him what I could do to help but he informed me that he did not know why he was not focused and that it had been happening in other classes. I gave him some helpful pointers and reminded him that participation is a big part of the work that we do for his class.
