Today, we viewed a time-lapse video of radish sprouts turning to face toward the sun. Atticus wrote his observations in the science workbook. He wrote explanations of what happened to the seedlings after sitting near a window. He wrote what the evidence of change is. He wrote why he thinks the position of the seedlings changed.
Today, as a treat for finishing his Life Structure and Function unit, Atticus and I watched a marine biology video on crustaceans. We discussed how they are detrivores and their role in the ocean ecosystem is to consume and recycle dead and decaying matter. We began watching the Chasing Coral documentary. We discussed how fossil fuel emissions are causing global warming, which is causing coral bleaching.
We continue to develop and focus on reading comprehension skills. I assigned 8 reading comprehension questions for last night's homework which we examined during today's session as Atticus answered a number of the questions incorrectly and not in full sentences. After reviewing the questions, I directed attention to specific passages in the story and reviewed with Atticus why and how those passages related to the homework questions. We then worked on revising the substance and style of the reading comprehension homework . I then distributed a 3 page story by O'Henry (also with a surprise ending) and worked with Atticus on strategies to improve comprehension.

Atticus is again not putting enough time into completing and focusing on his work.
Today's lesson focused on reading comprehension and spelling/suffixes. For homework, Atticus answered reading comprehension questions on "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and on an historical account of the battle that occurred during the Crimean War. During class, we focused on answering all of the questions and using the text to locate specific answers. Atticus then revised his homework questions and placed his answers into full sentences. We then read the entire poem aloud noting the rhythm and rhyme scheme. During the second segment of the session, Atticus completed exercises on the "doubling rule" when adding a noun suffix to a root word. He did very well with the exercises.

Today's lesson addressed reading comprehension and spelling skills. As we have studied the "Charge of Light Brigade, " and a short paragraph providing historical background Atticus' homework contained reading comprehension questions on the assignment and class work. During class ,we discussed the need to carefully read and answer the question as well as the need to carefully read the assigned material. I assisted Atticus in locating the textual support for the answers to the homework questions which Atticus then revised. We then completed a number of spelling exercises on the "doubling rule" when adding vowel suffixes.
