We are continuing our composition instruction throughout the week. Today, we studied the text and discussed how to summarize text to support a claim. We specifically addressed Dickens' opposition to the Poor Laws and debtor's prison laws as illustrated in the story, "A Christmas Carol." Atticus then composed a topic sentence for his second paragraph on social justice and drafted a second paragraph summarizing those portions of the text that support the claim that Dickens favored a repeal of both the Poor Laws and the laws establishing the debtor's prison.

Today, we observed slides of skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle cells. We observed and notated the following characteristics: shape and color, nucleus location and number, and arrangement patterns. Atticus wrote a response to the following two questions: How do the characteristics of each type differ? Based on your observations of the structure of each type of cell, can you infer any of their functions? We also read a passage discussing cardiac and smooth muscles. We added the vocabulary words and definitions to our science notebook.

We continued our pre -break lesson conceptualizing the literary essay. In response to Atticus' questions about essay writing I first discussed the purpose of the essay-to make and prove a claim. We discussed how to use the prompt to ascertain the claim and how to transform the claim into a topic sentence. Next, I explained the role of textual evidence to support the claim, In this regard, we examined the role of summarizing . Structurally, I explained the paragraph and the format of a paragraph ,specifically the need to indent the first word of the paragraph as Atticus has had ongoing difficulty in structuring paragraphs. Last, we addressed run-ons and word choice (our vs are) issues that appeared in his draft.

This morning, Atticus began an online mathematical screener and diagnostic assessment. This new program is associated with our curriculum and helps recognize individual strengths and weaknesses and accurately reflect grade-level capabilities. Atticus was asked to do his best but was assured that there was no grade involved and that missed questions were used to help guide our lessons. Atticus was very agreeable and wanted to show his best work. He will continue this diagnostic screener this week or until completion.

Welcome back! Today Atticus and I resumed our reading of ‘Out of My Mind’ after a brief discussion of previous events. He read chapters 17 and 18 with many stops to talk about both the plot and his thoughts about it. He made accurate predictions along the way, which he deemed as obvious. He also made a personal connection to an idea presented in chapter 17.

Today, Atticus and I discussed endo and exoskeletons. We read about invertebrates' hydrostatic skeletons and discussed how they move using muscle contractions around a water-filled tube. We read a passage about cuttlefish and jet propulsion, which is a form of movement related to hydrostatic skeletons. He wrote a compare/contrast paragraph discussing the similarities and differences between exo and hydrostatic skeletons.
